Lab Tester hands-on test of aider (aider-chat 0.86.2 from PyPI) in non-interactive mode inside a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, network off, against a tester-written OpenAI-compatible fake model on loopback with a dummy placeholder key and the SEARCH/REPLACE diff edit format, on a throwaway git repo. Tasks: (a) create a file and check the git auto-commit; (b) multi-turn edits across separate runs plus chat-history restore; (c) edge cases: malformed edit block, missing search text, paths outside the repo; (d) dry run, no auto-commits, dirty working tree, and model server returning HTTP 500 or hanging. Quality 3/5, agent_completable full, no account needed. Prescreen caution: two unpatched OSV advisories through 0.86.2 (architect-mode code injection, SSRF) and a public high-severity issue about repo config files running commands without asking; no malware reports, no install scripts, analytics opt-in.",

"error_text": "Version: aider-chat 0.86.2, Python 3.12 (package requires Python below 3.13).\n\nWHAT WORKED: aider-chat 0.86.2 (Python 3.12) runs fully non-interactively with --message and --yes-always against a tester-written OpenAI-compatible fake model on loopback (model openai/fake-coder, --openai-api-base, dummy placeholder key, --edit-format diff), no account needed. (a) Creating calc.py from a SEARCH/REPLACE block worked; aider auto-committed with a model-generated message, kept the git user as author and committer and added a 'Co-authored-by: aider (openai/fake-coder)' trailer; because the file was named on the command line before it existed, aider first created and committed an empty file (committer name suffixed '(aider)') and then committed the edit, so one task produced two commits. (b) Multi-turn: a second process applied an edit whose SEARCH text depended on turn 1 (the file then ran and printed 5); a third process with --restore-chat-history sent the earlier turns to the model (request grew from 12 to 16 messages) and applied a further edit, each committed. (c) Edge cases: a malformed block (missing REPLACE marker) and a SEARCH text that does not exist were rejected with clear messages ('Expected >>>>>>> REPLACE or =======', 'SearchReplaceNoExactMatch'), sent back to the model as a reflection, and left the file and HEAD unchanged; an absolute path outside the repo was refused ('is not in the subpath of'). (d) --dry-run left the file and HEAD unchanged ('Did not apply edit ... (--dry-run)'); --no-auto-commits applied the edit without a commit; a dirty user change to the edited file was committed separately before the edit. HTTP 500 and a hanging server were retried with backoff and reported as InternalServerError / APITimeoutError. The only listening socket was the tester's fake server on 127.0.0.1; aider itself opened none. The dummy key did not appear in console output, chat/input history files, the analytics log or HOME. --no-analytics kept analytics off.\n\nWHAT BROKE: Exit code is always 0, even when nothing was applied: malformed edit block, SEARCH text not found, refused out-of-repo path, git add failure, 9 failed retries on HTTP 500 (78 s) and a hanging server with --timeout 5 (214 s, 27 requests) all exited 0, so an agent or CI step cannot detect failure from the exit status (public issue #5552). Security observation (0.86.2): when new-file creation is auto-confirmed with the always-yes option, model output could create files outside the repository (an empty stray file in git mode, followed by a git 'outside repository' error and exit 0; full content outside the working folder with git disabled). This may overlap with a public issue reporting writes outside the repo; users should not combine always-yes with no-git on untrusted model output. --yes-always also auto-accepts the analytics opt-in question: with --analytics it answered yes, saved asked_opt_in=true in the user's aider data and tried to upload to PostHog (by source the same question is asked of a random ~10% of users when no analytics flag is given). With network off the upload failure also printed 'on_error handler failed: Analytics.posthog_error() takes 1 positional argument but 3 were given'. Each 500/timeout retry made 3 HTTP requests (27 total) because aider's retries stack on the client library's retries. Rough edges: with no network, every run printed a raw HTTPSConnectionPool error for the litellm model-price download and an 'Unknown context window size' warning; .aider* is added to .gitignore but .gitignore is left uncommitted. Package requires Python <3.13, so pip on a 3.13 system finds no installable version.\n\nUNTESTED: Behaviour with a real LLM (only a scripted fake was used), including edit quality and how a real model handles reflection messages; Edit formats other than diff (whole, udiff, patch, architect/editor) and the Python scripting API (aider.coders.Coder); Lint and test commands, /run, shell-command suggestions, repo-map quality, voice, browser GUI, watch mode and the version-check / auto-update path; Whether repository .aider.conf.yml command keys execute without a prompt (public advisories; not reproduced here); What the analytics events actually send over the network (network was off; only the local analytics log was read); Interactive behaviour of the 'Create new file?' and analytics prompts without --yes-always",
"fix": "No workaround for the exit code: an agent must check git log, file contents or the output text to confirm an edit was applied. Pass the no-analytics option together with always-yes so the analytics question isn't auto-accepted. Avoid always-yes with git disabled on untrusted model output. Use Python 3.12 or lower.",
