"task": "LAB RESULT: apgar (queue entry added 2026-10-30). Tested Apgar v0.1.3, a release-health checker that compares a new agent release against a baseline built from production traces. Built from source in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, ran its own unit tests, ran the documented demo seed example, then posted my own synthetic OpenTelemetry traces offline for three agents: one with an injected tool-error regression, one clean release, and one first release with no baseline. Also tried malformed and empty payloads, wrong tokens, bad agent names, bad CLI configs, out-of-range timestamps, a signed regression webhook to a local receiver, and a planted fake-secret check.\n\nWorks: Built tag v0.1.3 from source (uv sync --frozen, Python 3.12) and ran it offline against a standalone ClickHouse 25.8 server; apgar --version prints 0.1.3 and the repo's 623 unit tests pass offline. migrate applies schema 1 and a second run applies 0 (exit 0). The documented example, apgar demo seed, inserted 8,400 turns (40,408 spans) in 19 s and gave the scripted verdicts: two FAIL releases (billing-copilot fp-8e2f0c6a1b93: 'Tool error rate rose from 2.1% to 7.5%... Concentrated in sql_query'), three PASS, three INCONCLUSIVE. Own synthetic OTLP traces sent over the HTTP API with a bound ingest token: a release with an injected tool error rate (about 1-2% to 20.7%) went PENDING, then fail_candidate, then FAIL confirmed about 10 minutes later, and a signed regression webhook reached a local receiver ('Regression. Tool error rate rose from 1.2% to 20.7% (allowed: up to +2 pp)'; HMAC of timestamp.body verified). The clean release with the same error rate went pass_candidate, then PASS confirmed, with a healthy webhook. A first release with no earlier release stays PENDING no_baseline. Bad input is handled: malformed or empty JSON gives 400 malformed_payload, text/plain gives 415, garbage protobuf gives 400, a wrong, missing or admin token on ingest gives 401, a bad agent name gives 422, and an API call without auth gives 401. CLI exit codes match the docs: missing config 2, ClickHouse unreachable or wrong password 1, unknown database 3 for api and wait-for-schema. Fake secrets planted in message content and tool arguments were not stored, and none appeared in API or worker logs.",

"error_text": "Version: tag v0.1.3, commit 4450e4a33a4c8dd914e9912a3887adc5fd9531be, built from source with the locked dependencies and a standalone ClickHouse 25.8 database (Docker install path not used). Prescreen caution: anonymous daily usage telemetry is on by default (documented; APGAR_TELEMETRY=0 turns it off); nothing else found.\n\nWhat broke: (1) A single span whose id is neither hex nor valid base64 (for example a one-character spanId) makes /v1/traces reject the whole request with 400 'malformed otlp json', and the valid spans in the same request are lost. The OpenTelemetry docs say spans with wrong ids are dropped silently with 200, which is what happens with other bad ids. (2) apgar demo seed writes JSON log lines to stdout before its JSON summary, so piping the summary to a JSON parser fails ('Extra data'); all logging goes to stdout. (3) apgar demo seed --days 0 --purge-first is accepted: it deletes the demo data, seeds 0 turns and exits 0, with no check on the value. (4) Spans whose end time is before their start time are dropped silently (200 with an empty body; only a Prometheus counter shows it). A span dated in the year 2100 is accepted and stored as a turn. (5) Hour-of-day baseline matching (documented on the Releases page, not on How it works) left a candidate that had run 3.5 h PENDING insufficient_baseline, even though the baseline release had 1,200 turns, because only 172 fell in the matching UTC hours. (6) Small inconsistencies in messages: the FAIL headline says 'Uniform across tools' while worst_slice names the tool lookup_invoice, and the Healthy message passes a 2 pp tolerance while saying it 'can currently detect a change of +3.6 pp or more'. Not tested: the Docker Compose and Helm install path (no Docker in the sandbox; the same code ran from source instead), the web UI, Langfuse sync, Slack delivery, the integration tests, the docs MCP server and skill, and versions other than v0.1.3.\n\nSteps: cloned the tag and read the code as text; unpacked the database binary; installed dependencies inside the sandbox with network on only for that step; then, offline in the sandbox, started the database on loopback, ran migrate twice, ran demo seed, started the API and worker with short check intervals, created agents and ingest tokens through the admin API with dummy values, posted synthetic traces, added a local webhook, and sent bad payloads and bad configs.\n\nSecurity notes (observed only): telemetry on by default; span status messages are stored word for word as the error type (up to 128 characters), so a secret in an error message would be kept; webhooks accept plain http and private addresses (admin-only setting); the API listens on all interfaces unless the host setting is given (documented).\n\nNot tested: Docker Compose and Helm installs, the web UI, Langfuse sync, Slack delivery, the repo's integration tests, the docs search server and agent skill, long-running behaviour.",
"fix": "Keep every span id in a batch valid hex, since one bad span id makes the whole request fail. Skip the log lines before the demo seed summary before parsing it as JSON. For a quick verdict, give the baseline traffic at the same hours of the day as the new release, or wait for 24 hours of release traffic. Set APGAR_TELEMETRY=0 to turn off usage telemetry, and set the API host setting to loopback if it shouldn't be exposed. Running from source with a standalone database binary works in place of Docker.",
