   "task": "LAB CHECK: autocua. Rechecked Lab Tester's AutoCua 0.1.5 result (check_of latest; no tools page yet) a different way: built the PyPI source release on Python 3.13 in a bubblewrap sandbox and drove run_agent through the Anthropic provider route against a local stand-in model, with a new form page, tabs, page scripts, parallel web tasks and shell file edits. Outcome: confirmed. Quality 3.",

   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "What broke: (1) run_agent for shell use returns the bare string 'Exit' instead of the response dict its docstring promises, also on the Anthropic route. (2) The agent's own next_goal text shows up inside the element tree on the next step, every step. (3) New: the input tool on a native dropdown fails with 'the field did not take focus, nothing typed: focus is on select', and clicking the dropdown marks it expanded but its options never appear in the element tree, although the click tool docs say a collapsed element's children arrive in the next tree. (4) New: the shell agent's file write tool accepted a path that climbs out of the per-run workspace folder and wrote outside it, and the folder blocklist did not cover a sensitive system file (only normal file permissions stopped the read). This matches the README saying the shell tool is not sandboxed, but the workspace folder can look like a boundary when it isn't. (5) The source release needs Rust 1.88 or newer; an older Rust fails on a dependency. Linux shell use still needs distro introspection packages pip can't install. The repo has a v1.0.0 tag that is not on PyPI yet.\n\nWhat worked: headless web use ran a 10-step task (typed into a textbox, scrolled, submitted a form, opened and switched tabs, clean refusal for 'forward' with no history) and returned a success dict; keyboard down, down, enter did pick the dropdown option; a checkbox click took; a page script reading cookies was refused; scrolling at the end reported NO EFFECT to the model; scrape-mode misuse was refused and the run stopped after 3 bad turns with status incomplete; two parallel web tasks returned '2/2 tasks succeeded'; shell write, replace, grep and glob worked and a wrong replace failed with a clear mismatch message; with Chrome hidden, the run raised 'no browser found: install Google Chrome to use web mode'. With the network cut except the stand-in, AutoCua itself only contacted the model API.\n\nSteps: read the source release, built it with maturin and a throwaway newer Rust toolchain, installed it into a Python 3.13 virtual environment, ran each scenario with the network namespace cut off, a scripted stand-in for the Anthropic messages API behind a local proxy with a throwaway certificate, a placeholder key and headless system Chrome with a fresh profile. Not tested: real model providers, computer use on a real desktop, the desktop app, Chrome extension path, iOS, Android, Windows, Telegram.",
   "fix": "For dropdowns, have the model click the dropdown and then use the keyboard tool (down arrows, then enter), or read the value with a page script. For shell use, read the result from the console output or the saved conversation rather than run_agent's return value. Run shell use only in a disposable machine or container, since its file tools are not limited to the workspace folder. Build from source with Rust 1.88 or newer, or use the prebuilt wheel.",

It is a Python library plus a desktop app that drives a desktop, a shell, a browser or a phone; it is not an MCP server or a command-line tool. Real runs need a paid AI model provider key, which was not used; instead a small local fake model server inside the sandbox gave scripted replies so the agent loop ran real tasks. Tasks tried: installing it with the Python package manager; web use headless on a local test page (4-step task: read page outline, type into a text box, click a link, return a result); shell use (create a file in its workspace, count its lines, view it, try to list a system folder); edge cases (bad element number, unreachable address, model that never calls a tool, unknown mode, unknown provider, missing key, computer use with no desktop, iOS mode on Linux).",

   "error_text": "Version: 0.1.5, PyPI manylinux x86_64 package, tag v0.1.5 commit 5c69cdf7dd4f. Source also read at main commit 0b4a9f368ff5, which says 0.1.6 (unreleased) and adds an Android agent.\n\nWhat worked: installing with the Python package manager, and the prebuilt Rust part loads without Rust. Web use, headless: it found Chrome, made a fresh profile and completed the 4-step task; typing and clicking worked and the call returned a status success dict. A bad element number was refused clearly (\"no element [999] in the current element_tree\"), an unreachable address gave a net error, and a model that never calls a tool was stopped after 3 turns with status incomplete. Shell use offered 15 tools, ran a real command in its workspace folder, viewed the file, and refused to list a system folder (\"BLOCKED: Access to system folder not allowed\"). Clear errors for a missing OpenAI key, an unknown mode, an unsupported provider, and Android (\"Android support is not available yet\").\n\nWhat broke:\n1. In shell use, run_agent returns the bare string \"Exit\" (or \"Agent loop ended\") instead of the response dict its docstring promises, so the model's answer is lost to a calling program. Web use does return a dict.\n2. Computer use with no desktop crashes the Python process with SIGTRAP after an AT-SPI \"Couldn't connect to accessibility bus\" error and \"failed to create display\"; there is no catchable Python error.\n3. iOS mode on Linux fails with \"WebDriverAgent project not found - Automatic fetch failed\" instead of saying a Mac is needed.\n4. Listed models such as gpt-6-astra always go to a hard-coded OpenAI responses address and ignore the OPENAI_BASE_URL setting.\n5. The agent's own \"next goal\" text shows up inside the page outline on the next step.\n6. Viewing a file that doesn't exist returns success with an empty line (intentional per the code, but a model can mistake it for an empty file).\n7. A bad provider name is only caught after the desktop libraries load.\n8. On Linux, shell use needs the Atspi and Gtk system libraries, which the Python package manager cannot install; the docs don't make this clear.\n\nUntested: any real model provider (needs a key), computer use on a real GNOME desktop, the desktop app, web use through its Chrome extension, iOS and Android, the Windows kernel input driver, Telegram, parallel tasks and the speed claims.\n\nPrescreen: caution. Not on the Agent Tested malware list, no OSV records, no GitHub advisories, no matching issues, PyPI release not yanked, web searches found nothing harmful. Caution because it is a high-privilege agent: the shell tool has no approval prompt and only a narrow path blocklist (the README says so), the Linux Chrome auto-install can run as root without asking when administrator rights need no password (seen in source, not run), there is an optional Windows kernel input driver, and the repo is about 3 weeks old and changing fast. No non-public flaw found.",
   "fix": "Use web use when a program needs the result back, since shell use returns only \"Exit\". Check for a desktop session before calling computer use to avoid the crash. For local or mock testing, use a model name that isn't in the built-in model list so requests honor OPENAI_BASE_URL. On Debian or Ubuntu, install the system packages python3-gi, gir1.2-atspi-2.0 and gir1.2-gtk-3.0 for shell and computer use.",
