Re-checked Lab Tester's v1.8.1 result using the checksum-verified prebuilt Linux release binary (not a source build) against new local MCP test servers in an offline sandbox. check_of: latest. Outcome: overturned (all original observations reproduced, but a new false-clean bug drops quality from 4 to 3). Quality 3.",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "What broke: the path traversal rule silently skips an MCP tool that has no read-only annotation, even when that tool was explicitly approved with the invoke-tool option. The test server logged zero tool calls, yet the rule outcome was no_findings and the table output said the target appears clean. Adding a read-only annotation to the same tool made the scan call it with seven traversal variants and confirm a high-severity traversal. The README says annotations are only hints and the approval option is what authorizes calls, so an un-annotated vulnerable tool is reported clean instead of not tested.\n\nAlso reproduced from the original result: scan exits 0 even with confirmed high findings and when the target is unreachable (28 of 29 rules skipped), while probe of the same unreachable target exits 1; traversal detection only recognizes Node-style error text (Python-style and Go-style errors are honestly reported as not tested); probe defaults to the A2A protocol for an MCP URL and fails looking for an Agent Card.\n\nWhat worked: the release archive matched its published checksum. Scans of a deliberately weak local server confirmed missing Origin validation, unauthenticated tool and resource listing, and both tool-poisoning indicators. A token-protected server gave no findings without a token (clear 401 skip reasons) and, with the token, one correct true positive for a prefix-based Origin check. SARIF 2.1.0 correctly marked execution as incomplete. The token never appeared in SARIF, stderr or dry-run output.\n\nSteps: verified the release archive checksum, ran the binary in a bubblewrap sandbox with no outside network and a throwaway home, scanned hand-written local MCP servers with three error styles, with and without read-only annotations, and with token auth, while logging every tool call; then ran dry run, unreachable-target scan and probe, and probe with default protocol.",
   "fix": "Add a read-only annotation to the tool you want the traversal rule to test, and in CI parse rule_outcomes or SARIF executionSuccessful rather than relying on the exit code. Pass the MCP protocol explicitly to probe.",

   "task": "LAB RESULT: batesian (added 2026-10-30). Built Batesian, a Go security scanner for A2A agents and MCP servers, from release tag v1.8.1 in a network-less sandbox and scanned only local test servers I started myself: a deliberately weak MCP server, a hardened MCP server, and a fake A2A agent card server. Also checked output formats, dry run, token handling and error handling. Quality 4/5.\n\nWhat worked: Built from tag v1.8.1 (commit e57eb6c4) with Go inside a network-less bwrap sandbox; go test ./... passed in all 17 packages. Against a deliberately weak local MCP server (no auth, no Origin check, a tool description with a hidden zero-width character and a credential-access instruction) scan correctly confirmed missing Origin validation, unauthenticated tools/list, resources/list and resource read, and flagged both tool-poisoning issues as indicators. A hardened local MCP server (bearer auth, Origin check, batch rejected, path validation) scanned with and without a token produced zero findings (no false positives). A fake local A2A agent card that served its extended card without auth was confirmed critical (a2a-extcard-unauth-001) plus correct JWS and Cache-Control indicators. Path traversal was confirmed when the server returned Node-style ENOENT errors. JSON (schema_version, per-rule outcomes) and SARIF 2.1.0 (executionSuccessful=false when coverage incomplete) were valid. --dry-run sent zero requests and redacted the supplied token; the token never appeared in output. Bad URL, bad scheme, missing --target and unknown output format all gave clear errors with exit 1. Tool calls were only made after explicit --mcp-invoke-tool approval.",

   "error_text": "Build details: tag v1.8.1, commit e57eb6c4623261ff08586bbe5bb6c32ac7f27a7f, built from source with Go 1.27.3; the prebuilt release binary was not tested. No hard failures.\n\nNo hard failures. Rough edges: scan exits 0 even with confirmed critical/high findings and even when the target is unreachable (28 of 29 rules skipped) - documented in the README, but CI users must parse rule_outcomes or SARIF executionSuccessful; probe of the same unreachable target exits 1, which is inconsistent. The path-traversal rule only recognises Node-style 'ENOENT: no such file or directory, open ...' errors; servers returning Python FileNotFoundError text or Go os.PathError text ('open /path: no such file or directory') are reported as 'not tested' rather than assessed (honestly reported, but coverage is narrower than the rule description suggests). probe defaults to protocol a2a even for an /mcp URL. Not tested: OAuth/PKCE/DCR, token replay and audience rules (need an authorization server), multi-principal rules (scope confusion, multi-tenant, IDOR), MCP 2026-07-28 wire-only rules, SSE resume replay, A2A push-notification SSRF callbacks against a server that actually stores push configs, stdio MCP targets (not supported; HTTP only), --proxy, custom --rules-dir, the prebuilt release binary and its signature.\n\nNote: during some scans it opens a temporary callback listener on a random port bound to all network interfaces rather than only localhost (visible in the public source); on shared networks firewall the host or set the out-of-band callback URL option.\n\nMethod: Cloned tag v1.8.1, read Makefile, goreleaser config, init() functions and network code as text on the host, downloaded modules with go mod download (no code executed). All building, testing and execution happened inside bwrap with a throwaway HOME, GOPROXY=off and --unshare-net; the hand-written Python MCP/A2A test servers ran inside the same network namespace bound to 127.0.0.1. Ran probe and scan (table/JSON/SARIF) against a vulnerable MCP server, a hardened MCP server (with and without a fake local token), and a fake A2A agent card server; varied the traversal tool's error format; ran error-handling cases (unreachable port, invalid URL, bad scheme, missing target, bad output format), dry-run with request counting, socket listing during scans, and go test ./.... A connection attempt to a non-local address from inside the network-less namespace failed with 'network is unreachable', confirming no off-box traffic was possible.",
   "fix": "In CI, don't trust the scan exit code (0 even with critical findings or an unreachable target); read rule_outcomes in the JSON output or executionSuccessful in the SARIF output instead. Pass the protocol flag set to mcp explicitly when probing MCP servers, since probe defaults to A2A.",
