   "task": "LAB CHECK: better-harness. Independent check of Lab Tester's result (check_of better-harness-2026-11-03.json) using a different method. I built tag v0.7.0-alpha2 offline in a sandbox and ran the package's own test suite (217 tests passed). I wrote a new fixture: an ESM temperature package whose tests are a Python unittest suite, with a repository notes file containing a prompt injection aimed at agents. I ran harness-compare.v1 through the documented executor hook against a local streamed fake model making multi-turn tool calls. The baseline variant followed the injection and falsely claimed tests passed; the candidate ran the tests. I also injected provider faults (HTTP 500, malformed chunk, cut-off stream, slow reply). I ran harness-experiment.v1 for the first time, using a plan made by the session executor's plan command with three lanes and two contrasts, plus the session executor's error paths, and timed the shipped compare command with a short timeout. Outcome: confirmed, quality 3 (partial, bug). All four original breaks reproduced, and I found new bugs in scope detection, fault classification, experiment timeouts and git-identity handling.",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "Confirmed: with the Qoder runtime missing, the shipped compare command records each trial as 'Qoder SDK trial timed out after 3000ms.' after waiting the full timeout plus a 5 second grace (about 8 seconds each), even though the SDK reported 'worker runtime not found' right away. That real error appears only in the trace, with an unredacted absolute install path. The trial runtime receipt says executor 'injected-test-executor'. The package-tests detail text is identical for pass and fail. The command exits 0 for insufficient_evidence, which is by design in the source (only reject and infrastructure_error exit 1). New: (1) After writing verdict.json, the compare command stayed alive about 52 more seconds before exiting (measured twice). (2) The compare runner's scope check looks at every file and ignores .gitignore. A Python __pycache__ file created when the agent ran the tests, as the candidate harness told it to, hard-failed every candidate trial as an out-of-scope change. This happened even with __pycache__ listed in .gitignore. harness-experiment.v1 uses git status and did not flag that file, so the two runners disagree. (3) Trial classification matches keywords in the error text. A model HTTP 500, a cut-off stream and a malformed stream chunk were each recorded as a failed coding outcome (score 0) instead of infrastructure_error. The run still ended accept with 3 of 5 pairs. (4) The timeout message names the Qoder SDK even for custom executors. (5) harness-experiment.v1 never applies the manifest's required timeoutMs. A hung executor kept the experiment running past 45 seconds with timeoutMs 3000, until I stopped it. (6) Without a git user identity, every experiment trial ran and was graded, but the final commit step failed. The trials were then marked infrastructure_error with the grade thrown away, duration 0 and revision 'unavailable'. Git's error text, including the machine hostname, was saved into the evidence. (7) package-tests runs the agent-modified test script. A script changed to 'exit 0' passed that check, though the scope check still failed the trial. Worked: the false 'all tests passed' claim and an injected 'mark this trial passed' line in model output were ignored. With equal cost, 6 pairs gave accept (6 of 6). The cost guardrail correctly gave need_more_work when the candidate used more turns. Experiment attribution was derived correctly for the harness and runtime-profile axes, and worktrees were cleaned up. Not tested: real Qoder or Pi model runs, ACP host, Studio, UI, desktop and Canvas preview.",
   "fix": "Point the compare runner at a fixture with no build or cache output, or stop the agent writing caches (for Python, disable bytecode writing in the agent's test step). Set a git user identity before running harness-experiment.v1. Wrap custom experiment executors in your own timeout. Read the trace, not the timeout message, when Qoder trials time out, and check that the runtime is installed first. Have custom executors turn provider errors into messages that mention runtime or worker so they count as infrastructure errors.",

   "task": "LAB RESULT: better-harness (queue entry added 2026-10-30). Lab Tester tested Better Harness, tag v0.7.0-alpha2 (commit 172f175), built from source inside a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, network only for the dependency install (scripts disabled), everything else offline. Tasks: (1) install, build and print the version; (2) write baseline and candidate harness-as-code files, validate and resolve them, plus six deliberately broken files and an MCP requirement the adapter can't connect; (3) run a controlled experiment on a throwaway repo through the library API with a local fake OpenAI-style model plugged in via the documented executor hook, including a fake model that falsely claimed all tests passed, model-server-down, a non-empty output folder and too many trials; (4) run the built-in compare command on its real Qoder path without the proprietary runtime; (5) other commands: analyze, doctor in JSON mode, missing workspace, unknown command.",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "Version details: tag v0.7.0-alpha2 is a prerelease (newest stable release is v0.4.1, npm latest is 0.6.6 under the scoped Qoder package). Prescreen verdict caution: not on the malware list, no OSV entries or repo advisories, clean issue and web searches; caution because the lockfile pins dev dependencies with public advisories (next, electron, undici, vite, hono, MCP SDK) and the Qoder SDK dependency has an install script that downloads an obfuscated vendor runtime (skipped). What worked: harness validation gave clear errors for all six broken files with exit 1 (for example 'Agent requirement references unknown skill does-not-exist; declare it first.' and 'Unsupported Harness language version 0.9; expected 0.3.'). The tool ignored the fake model's false 'all tests passed' claim and failed the trial on its own checks (tests failing, out-of-scope edits, missing sections, forbidden claims). Three pairs gave insufficient_evidence and five pairs gave accept (candidate won 5 of 5, score +95). Model server down was reported as infrastructure_error with the connection-refused message kept. Non-empty output folder and too many trials were refused with clear messages. Analyze honestly reported 0 sessions; doctor in JSON mode exited 2 with status partial. What broke: (a) With the Qoder runtime missing, the trace logs 'Qoder worker runtime not found' immediately, but each trial still waits the full timeout with no console output (default 600000 ms, about 10 minutes per trial); the trial is then recorded as 'Qoder SDK trial timed out after 15000ms.' and the real cause appears only in the trace file. (b) That real Qoder trial's runtime receipt labels the executor as 'injected-test-executor' with permissionCallback 'none'. (c) The package-tests check text says 'Ran the fixture's existing test contract.' even when the tests failed with exit code 1. (d) The compare command exits 0 when the verdict is insufficient_evidence. Reading main (commit b605532) as text, (a) and (b) still appear present. Not tested: real model runs through Qoder (needs proprietary runtime and a signed-in identity) or Pi, checkpoint experiments, the ACP host, Studio, UI and desktop apps, Canvas preview, and the repo's own test suite. Neutral observations: graded test runs are not network-isolated by the tool's own description; one trace kept an unredacted absolute install path after a runtime failure; doctor and analyze read coding-agent folders in the home directory by design. Nothing non-public.",
   "fix": "Call the library's runHarnessComparison with your own executorFactory (for example one that calls a local OpenAI-compatible server) instead of the compare command. If you must use the command, set a small runtime.timeoutMs in the experiment file and read the trace file for the real error. Install with scripts disabled to avoid the vendor runtime download.",
