   "task": "LAB CHECK: chat-on-steroids. Independent re-check of Lab Tester's result file chat-on-steroids-2026-10-28.json. Instead of a source build with a custom raw JSON-RPC harness, I unpacked the official checksum-verified 2.1.46 Linux .deb and ran the whole packaged desktop app offline in a sandbox with a fresh first-launch setup, configured it through its own settings screens (manual connection method, Read-only switch, command allowlist) and drove its Core and Desktop MCP servers with the official MCP TypeScript SDK client, using new inputs and edge cases. Outcome: confirmed, quality 3. The ChatGPT host itself was not tested (needs an account).",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "What worked: both servers started (chat-on-steroids-core 2.1.46 with 10 tools, chat-on-steroids-desktop 2.1.46 with 9 browser tools on Linux). Real calls worked: read with non-ASCII and spaced names and a start line, view_image, apply_patch add/update/move/delete, command batches with per-command exit codes, an interactive terminal session answered through write_stdin. Folder limits held: links pointing out of the approved folder, parent-folder steps and outside absolute paths were refused. The Read-only switch removed the write and command tools live. The command allowlist only ran exact matches and refused chaining, substitution, redirection and other bypass attempts. A token for one surface did not open the other.\n\nWhat broke: (1) Confirmed from the original: relative paths are inconsistent. After reading a file in a subfolder, read resolved a relative path against that subfolder (not found), while apply_patch with the same style of path reported success but created a nested duplicate folder. (2) New: code-mode exec reports ordinary runtime errors (a thrown error, a property read on null) as CODE_MODE_PARSE_ERROR saying the source could not be parsed, which is misleading. (3) New: the secrets shield hid fake API keys, a GitHub token and a private key block, but left a password inside a database connection URL and a bearer authorization header visible, although the release notes say passwords and tokens are hidden. (4) New: apply_patch Add File on an existing 5000-line file replaced it without warning and reported it as added. (5) New: in a command batch, an explicit exit in one command ended the shell, so the next command never ran, and the top-line exit code was that later code instead of the first non-zero one, with no batch note. (6) Docs: the README says only Windows also turns on desktop permissions at first launch, but the Linux first-launch settings also turned on screen and control, so browser tools were published. Every result also carries a long identity notice when the caller is not a known ChatGPT chat.\n\nNot tested: the ChatGPT connection (needs an account, developer mode, tunnel and API key), the browser extension, native desktop control, workers and plans.",
   "fix": "Use absolute virtual paths (for example the approved folder name followed by the full path) for every tool; use Update File rather than Add File for existing files; keep each batch command free of an explicit exit; do not rely on the secrets shield for passwords in URLs or bearer headers; turn on Read-only or the command allowlist when supervising is not possible.",

Prescreened (no malware list entry, no npm/PyPI package, no OSV hit or advisory), built v2.1.46 from source in a bubblewrap sandbox, offline after install. Ran the upstream MCP tests, started the app's own MCP server, called initialize, tools/list and real tool calls (read, exec_command, apply_patch, exec, usage), and tried folder limits, parent-folder escapes, read-only mode and a wrong secret path.",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "other",
   "error_text": "Main job not testable: Chat On Steroids is an Electron desktop app. ChatGPT reaches it through a custom MCP app, which needs a ChatGPT account or workspace with Developer mode, an OpenAI tunnel with a restricted API key, and the browser extension. No account or key was used. There is no stdio or headless MCP mode; the server is Streamable HTTP on localhost behind a secret path, started by the app.\n\nBuild: git tag v2.1.46, commit b2761458 (latest stable release, Oct 25, 2026); built from source, release binaries not checked. Installed dependencies with npm inside the sandbox; npm 11 skipped dependency install scripts, prebuilt native modules loaded fine, but the Electron binary had to be fetched separately because tests failed with 'Electron failed to install correctly'. Upstream MCP tests: 189 passed, 16 skipped. Server reports chat-on-steroids-core 2.1.46; Core lists 8 tools, Desktop lists 0 on Linux. Folder limits, parent-folder escapes, read-only mode, the Core/Desktop split and a wrong secret path were all refused correctly.\n\nBugs or confusing behaviour: (1) Relative paths behave differently per tool. read with a relative path starting with the folder name fails with 'is relative and this chat has no active folder yet. Use a full path'. Later a bare file name was resolved against the folder of the last file read instead of the approved folder root. apply_patch with an Add File line using a relative path reported success but created the file in a nested duplicate folder. (2) Read-only refusal text is inconsistent: exec_command says it is disabled because Read-only mode is on, while apply_patch says it is disabled by the current Chat On Steroids permissions.\n\nNot tested: GUI, extension, tunnel, desktop control (Windows/macOS only), workers, Goal/Loop. Shell commands run with full user rights outside the approved folders, which the project documents.",
   "fix": "Use the server's virtual absolute paths (the approved folder's full path) for both read and apply_patch; then both resolve correctly. No workaround for the ChatGPT account and API key requirement.",
