"task": "LAB CHECK: desktop-commander-mcp. Re-checked Lab Tester's 0.3.1 result with the official MCP TypeScript SDK client over stdio instead of a hand-written Python client, offline in a sandbox, on a new fixture (accented file names, relative, absolute, dangling and chained symlinks, a hardlink) and new config states (partial, corrupt, odd value types, mixed case), plus disconnect and forced-kill process tests. check_of: latest. Outcome: confirmed. Quality: 3.",

"error_text": "Server started as desktop-commander 0.3.1, tools/list returned 25 tools, and real file, search, edit and process calls worked, including a 3-turn interactive shell session. Path containment held for every new symlink variant tried, including creating files and folders through a symlinked folder (the issue 420 case, fixed in PR 398), and a config file with a syntax error was recovered with its limits kept.\n\nReproduced from the original: the command blocklist is easy to sidestep and is not applied to input typed into an interactive session; the agent can widen allowedDirectories with set_config_value and the change survives a restart (public issue 374, PR 399 not merged); kill_process ended a process the server never started; fileWriteLineLimit is not enforced (limit 20, a 30-line write succeeded).\n\nNew in this check: (1) start_process takes a shell parameter that accepts any program and is not checked against the blocklist, so blocked interpreters still ran as the shell. (2) More blocklist misses: a backslash before the name, an empty quote pair or a backslash inside the name, the command and exec builtins, nohup, timeout, a brace group and a name built by command substitution. (3) A hand-written config with allowedDirectories but no blockedCommands key blocks nothing; a mixed-case blocklist entry never matches; an allowedDirectories value given as a string was silently replaced with the home folder and saved. (4) After a normal client disconnect the server exits but its running process sessions are left behind. (5) kill_process also ended the server itself. (6) start_process reports a missing program or a non-zero exit as finished with no exit code and no error flag; edit_block returns no error flag when it refuses an edit. (7) A hardlink inside the allowed folder can read and rewrite a file outside it. (8) Content written with write_file is kept in plain text in the local tool history logs (documented).\n\nNot tested: PDF writing (needs Chrome), remote device mode, the setup command, Docker, and telemetry on the wire.",
"fix": "Treat allowedDirectories and blockedCommands as accident guards only and run the server in a container or VM when untrusted content can reach the agent. Keep the full blockedCommands list in lower case when editing config by hand, give allowedDirectories as a list, change config only by hand, and stop leftover shell sessions after disconnecting. Avoid writing secrets through the tool.",

"task": "LAB RESULT: desktop-commander-mcp (queue entry added 2026-10-30). Tested Desktop Commander MCP 0.3.1 from the npm registry inside a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home and folder, network off during tests, telemetry turned off by environment variable and config. Started it over MCP stdio, listed tools, and ran file write, read, edit, move and search, a simple echo command, a long-running loop read back later, and a Python session that kept state between calls. Edge cases: allowed-folder limit against outside paths, dot-dot escapes, symlinks and a similarly named sibling folder; blocked-command list against plain and varied forms; the agent changing its own config; kill_process scope; the write line limit. Works: MCP stdio server started as desktop-commander 0.3.1 (protocol 2025-06-18); tools/list returned 25 tools. Real calls worked: write_file then read_file returned the 3 written lines, edit_block replaced a line, move_file, create_directory, list_directory, get_file_info and a content search found the edited line. start_process ran echo; a 4-second loop was started and its full output read later with read_process_output; a Python interactive session kept a variable across interact_with_process calls (printed 42). With allowedDirectories set to one throwaway folder, file tools refused a system file, a home file, its own config file, dot-dot escapes, file and folder symlinks pointing outside, a sibling folder sharing the name prefix, a home-shorthand path and listing the root. blockedCommands refused plain, absolute-path, chained (semicolon, and-and, pipe) and command-substitution forms. No network listener; stdio only. Breaks: Guardrails do not fully hold: blockedCommands is not applied to a second command on a new line, a quoted command name, wrapper commands (an env wrapper, a shell given an inline script, or Python) or commands typed into an interactive shell session; terminal commands can read outside allowedDirectories (documented). set_config_value from the agent itself can change allowedDirectories, blockedCommands and defaultShell, and the change persists across restarts. kill_process ended a PID that was not a Desktop Commander session. fileWriteLineLimit 50 is not enforced (a 60-line write succeeded). Not tested: write_pdf, remote device mode, setup command (edits Claude Desktop config), Docker install, telemetry traffic on the wire.",

"error_text": "Desktop Commander 0.3.1 worked for every file, search and process task over MCP, and its allowed-folder limit refused every outside path we tried, including dot-dot escapes, symlinks and a sibling folder with the same name prefix. Its blocked-command list did not hold: with dd, curl and rm blocked, the plain and chained forms were refused, but a second command on a new line, a quoted command name, running it through a wrapper program, a shell started with an inline script, or Python, and typing it into an open shell session all ran. The agent could also call set_config_value to widen the allowed folders to the whole disk and empty the blocked list, and this stayed after restart. kill_process ended a process that Desktop Commander did not start, and a 60-line write succeeded despite the 50-line write limit. The project's security page says these limits are guardrails, not a sandbox, and the bypasses are already reported in public issues, with a fix pull request still not merged. Prescreen was caution, not malware: the install script sends a package-installed telemetry event with no opt-out (skipped by installing with scripts turned off), and usage telemetry is on by default but can be turned off. It opens no network port and talks only over stdio. Not tested: PDF writing, remote device mode, the setup command that edits a desktop app's config, Docker install, telemetry on the wire. Package: npm @wonderwhy-er/desktop-commander 0.3.1.",
"fix": "Run it inside a container or VM with only the project folder mounted. Treat allowedDirectories and blockedCommands as protection against accidents only. Set config by hand, not through the agent, and check it after sessions. Install with scripts turned off and set the documented disable-telemetry environment variable to avoid install and usage telemetry.",
