"error_text": "All six reported breaks reproduced through the Python API. 1) With no network every mockllm eval fails on its first generate because mockllm counts tokens with tiktoken, which tries to download the o200k_base encoding; the eval function does not raise, it returns a log with status error. Placing the encoding file in the tiktoken cache folder under its own file name does not help. 2) A scorer exception gives exit code 0 from the CLI eval command, also with the fail-on-error option. New: in Python, eval with fail_on_error set to true also returns normally with status error, and the CLI eval-retry command exits 0 when the retried run fails again. Only eval-set reports failure (eval_set returned False, CLI exit 1). 3) The console says 'Task interrupted (no samples completed before interruption)' for a scorer exception. 4) An OSError (read-only file system) from a sandbox file write, and a plain ValueError raised by a custom tool, fail the whole sample instead of being returned to the model; PermissionError and ToolError are returned to the model correctly. 5) The includes scorer marks 'The answer is not 15.' correct for target 15; new: the match scorer does the same. 6) The local sandbox lets tool writes with relative parent paths or absolute paths land outside the sample folder (documented as no isolation). New: a .env file in the working directory was loaded into the process environment when Inspect was used as a plain library. Worked: multi-turn react agent with lookups, a ToolError, a wrong-type argument returned as a clear parsing error, a sandbox file save and submit, scored correct by a file-checking scorer; a false 'all checks passed' claim was scored incorrect; message and token limits stopped a looping agent with the limit recorded; eval_retry re-ran a failed log to success (a public issue about CLI eval-retry raising an asyncio error did not reproduce); a custom model provider ran offline with no tokenizer download; the math scorer marked a code-shaped answer incorrect; a dummy API key did not appear in any of 31 logs. Not tested: Docker and Kubernetes sandboxes, real providers, MCP tools, the log viewer UI, Python versions other than 3.13.",
"fix": "Tokenizer: save the o200k_base encoding file in a folder named by the TIKTOKEN_CACHE_DIR variable under the SHA-1 hex digest of its download address (not under its own name); mockllm evals then run fully offline. Or use a small custom model provider, which does not count tokens. Exit codes: check the returned log status (or read it back with read_eval_log) instead of trusting exit codes or fail_on_error; use eval-set or eval_set when a failure signal is needed. Tools: raise ToolError (or catch OSError and re-raise as ToolError) so errors go back to the model instead of failing the sample. Scorers: avoid the includes and match scorers for answers that can be negated, or add a stricter custom scorer. Use Docker or a stronger sandbox for untrusted agents, and keep unrelated secrets out of .env files in eval working folders.",

Tested Inspect AI 0.3.282 from PyPI offline in an isolated sandbox using the built-in mock model: a simple eval with log reading, a four-turn tool-using agent eval, exit codes on failures, and edge cases (a false task-complete claim, an injected instruction in tool output, path handling in the local sandbox, the log viewer bind address, secrets in logs). Prescreen: caution. Not listed in the a public site malware list the OSV vulnerability database returns no vulnerabilities for PyPI inspect-ai 0.3.282 No GitHub security advisories published for the repo; repo issue search for malware/steal/token/exfiltrat/backdoor/miner turned up only unrelated build, feature and token-counting issues PyPI 0.3.282 is not yanked (MIT, uploaded 2026-10-19); newer 0.3.287 exists Public critical code-execution advisory for 0.3.184-0.3.255 (math scorer), fixed in 0.3.256 A third-party scanner shows low-confidence heuristic alerts on transitive dependencies and two older versions; no confirmed malware found Single console entry point (inspect = inspect_ai._cli.main:main); pure-Python wheel, no install scripts or .pth files Telemetry is opt-in; .env auto-loaded; many unpinned runtime deps; local sandbox has no isolation by design Works: Offline install from PyPI wheels; inspect --version prints 0.3.282. A simple mockllm eval writes a .eval log that inspect log dump and the Python log API (read_eval_log, list_eval_logs) read correctly (accuracy 0.5 on 2 samples). A react agent with custom tools ran 4 turns of mockllm tool calls (add, add, write_file, submit) and a file-checking scorer marked it correct. Bad tool names and bad argument types come back to the model as clear parsing errors. A custom scorer that checks the sandbox file rejected a false 'all tests passed, task complete' claim. An injected instruction in tool output was simply recorded; the scorer still graded against the target. Bad task name, missing file, unknown provider and a provider without its SDK all exit 1 with clear messages; eval-set exits 1 on a failed task. inspect view binds 127.0.0.1 by default, refuses 0.0.0.0 without an auth token or explicit unsafe flag, and rejects foreign Host (400) and Origin (403) headers. Telemetry is off unless INSPECT_TELEMETRY is set. A dummy API key in the environment did not show up in any log.",

"error_text": "Package: inspect-ai 0.3.282 PyPI wheel, Python 3.13. 1) With no network, every mockllm eval fails on its first generate: mockllm counts tokens with tiktoken, which tries to download the o200k_base encoding. The error is logged as status 'error' and shown as 'Task interrupted'. Workaround: put the encoding file (sha256 446a9538...) in a directory and point TIKTOKEN_CACHE_DIR at it. 2) the inspect eval command, (CLI, including --json and --display none) exits 0 when the task ends with status 'error' (scorer exception, solver/model exception, sandbox write error) and even with --fail-on-error. Only eval-set returns 1. Agents that check exit codes will think a failed eval passed. 3) The console says 'Task interrupted (no samples completed before interruption)' for errors that were not interruptions. 4) A sandbox write error (OSError) fails the whole sample instead of being returned to the model as a tool error. 5) The built-in includes() scorer does a substring match, so 'the answer is not 15' counts as correct for target 15 (working as designed, but it trusts the model's text). 6) The local sandbox does not confine paths: write_file with ../ or an absolute path writes outside the sample's temp dir (documented as no isolation). Not tested: Docker/K8s sandboxes, the math() scorer and the fix for its earlier advisory (needs extras), real model providers, MCP tools, eval-retry, the VS Code extension, the inspect view UI in a browser. Method: PyPI wheels downloaded on the host (download only); venv, install and all runs inside bwrap with a throwaway HOME, read-only root, cleared env and no network (--unshare-all). Model was mockllm/model with custom_outputs (ModelOutput.for_tool_call) only, no real keys. Ran the CLI (the inspect eval command, eval-set, log dump, view) and the Python API (eval, read_eval_log). Inspect view was probed only on loopback inside the sandbox.",
