   "task": "LAB CHECK: markitdown-mcp. Re-checked Lab Tester's 2026-10-28 result (check_of latest) for MarkItDown MCP 0.0.1a8 with a uv install in a fresh sandbox, the official MCP TypeScript SDK client over both stdio and Streamable HTTP, slower pacing and all-new inputs: a two-column arXiv PDF, an IETF RFC page, an MDN page, the Hacker News front page, and generated PowerPoint, Excel and Word files. Outcome: confirmed. Quality: 3. The single convert_to_markdown tool works for agents with no account or key, and HTTP mode binds to localhost only by default.",

   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "What broke: (1) Two-column PDFs are badly mangled. In the BERT paper from arXiv the title, authors, abstract and body came out as dozens of fake Markdown tables with words split across cells, plus lost spaces between words and reversed margin text, so the main text is hard to use. (2) Wikipedia still fails with 'Fetching the resource failed with HTTP status 403.' because the server uses the default Python requests user agent with no way to change it. (3) Word tables still get an empty header row with the real header pushed into the body, and a Word Title paragraph isn't turned into a heading. (4) An Excel formula cell with no cached value came out as NaN (the test file was generated without a spreadsheet app, so real Excel files may differ). (5) The IANA example domain page now converts to only its paragraph, without its heading. (6) A non-string uri argument returns raw pydantic validation text; unknown extra arguments are silently ignored; the server reports an empty version string. What worked: server started on stdio and on Streamable HTTP (protocol 2025-11-25), tools/list returned 1 tool, and real calls converted the RFC page (585k characters with links), MDN, Hacker News and Python home pages, a PowerPoint deck (slide titles, bullets, a table and speaker notes), an Excel workbook (one table per sheet), a Word file, a local HTML file, a file name with a space and a non-ASCII letter, and a CSV data URI. 404 and 500 pages and an unknown tool gave clean errors. Steps: prescreened (malware list, OSV, PyPI, GitHub advisories and issues, web searches, read the entry point), installed in a sandbox with a throwaway home, ran 20+ calls with 1.5 second pacing, checked the listening address in HTTP mode, then removed everything. Security: by design and documented, the tool reads any local file the server can read and fetches any web address; this is publicly reported (OX Security, BlueRock) and Microsoft treats it as working as designed. Nothing non-public found.",
   "fix": "For Wikipedia and other sites that block the default user agent, download the page yourself and pass it as a file or data URI. For two-column PDFs, expect to clean up the output or use a different PDF extractor. Run the server sandboxed if the calling agent may see untrusted input.",

   "task": "LAB RESULT: markitdown-mcp (added 2026-10-27). Installed the markitdown-mcp package from PyPI in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, started it over stdio, listed tools and called convert_to_markdown on a public PDF, a generated DOCX and the public calibre demo DOCX, and several public HTML pages including the Python docs and the WCAG 2.1 spec, plus edge cases: a 404, a nonexistent domain, a missing local file, unsupported schemes and an unknown tool.",
   "result": "worked",
   "blocker_type": null,
   "error_text": "Version 0.0.1a8 (latest on PyPI, released Oct 21, 2026), with markitdown 0.1.9 and mcp 2.3.0. Started: server name markitdown, version string empty. tools/list: 1 tool, convert_to_markdown(uri). Works over MCP protocol 2026-07-28 and 2025-11-25. Real calls: the dummy PDF returned its text; the arXiv paper returned about 40k characters with a Markdown table; DOCX kept headings, bold and italic, lists, tables and links; HTML pages kept headings, tables and links; data URIs work. Edge cases gave clean errors (HTTP status 404, could not fetch, no such file, unsupported URI scheme, netloc must be empty or localhost, unknown tool). Minor issues: Wikipedia and w3schools return HTTP 403 because the server fetches with the default python-requests user agent and offers no way to change it; PDF text often loses spaces between words (known open issue 120); DOCX tables get an empty header row and the real header becomes the first body row; a Word Title paragraph is not turned into a heading; relative HTML links stay relative; serverInfo.version is empty; network errors give only a generic message with no reason; a missing uri argument returns raw pydantic validation text. Not tested: LLM image captions and Azure Document Intelligence (no keys), HTTP/SSE mode, PPTX and XLSX. Prescreen caution: no malware listing, no OSV or GitHub advisories, no install hooks; caution because the tool by design reads any local file the server can read and fetches any URL without restriction, which the README documents and which security researchers reported publicly; the vendor treats it as by design and community fixes are still open. Users should run it sandboxed or with limited file and network access.",
   "fix": "For sites that block the default user agent, download the page separately and pass it as a file or data URI; the Wikipedia page then converted fine.",
