"task": "LAB RESULT: rustxng (RustXNG, queue entry added 2026-11-02). Tested the official v0.27.1 Linux musl release binary (checksum verified) inside a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, bound to loopback only, no account or key. Tasks: started the server per the README and checked the health endpoint; ran real JSON searches with result limits, a single-engine filter and a domain filter; tried the optional page-text feature; started the MCP server over stdio, listed tools and made real search calls; tried edge cases (empty or missing query, bad and out-of-range parameters, unknown engine, unknown fields, reading a page that search did not return).",

"error_text": "Build: release asset rustxng-v0.27.1-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl, tag v0.27.1, commit 3a31312; SHA-256 matched the published checksum file, the release manifest and the GitHub asset digest. Network off for version and help, on for server and MCP runs because metasearch must reach public search engines.\n\nWhat worked: server bound to loopback on its default port, health check 200. JSON search for \"tokio runtime documentation\" with five results returned five relevant results in about 3 seconds; the single-engine filter (wikipedia) and the domain filter worked. MCP: started as serverInfo rustxng 0.27.1 (protocol 2025-06-18); tools/list returned 2 tools (search and read_page, both read-only); a real search call for \"SearXNG metasearch engine\" with limit 3 returned the SearXNG GitHub repository first. MCP errors are clear: \"query must not be empty\", \"limit must be between 1 and 10\", unknown fields are rejected with the allowed names listed, and read_page refuses pages not returned by search in the session.\n\nWhat broke (HTTP API):\n- Bad parameters are silently ignored: an unknown engine name returns 200 with results from all default engines (345 results from 21 engines); max_results 0 returns 1 result and 500 returns 200 although the README calls 1-200 the supported range; an invalid time_range is ignored.\n- Errors are not JSON even when JSON format is requested: a missing query returns an HTML 400 page (\"missing query\"); a non-numeric max_results returns plain text \"Failed to deserialize query string: max_results: invalid digit found in string\".\n- Failed page-text fetches are silent: asking for raw content just omits the field on each result with no error.\n- HTTP and MCP are inconsistent: MCP uses limit (1-10) while HTTP uses max_results, and MCP cannot choose engines.\n- Default log level is DEBUG and logs full upstream request addresses including the search terms (privacy note).\n- Upstream blocking: 15-17 engines failed on every query (CAPTCHA from some, \"Too many requests\" and \"Access denied\" from others); results still came from roughly half a dozen engines.\n\nUntested: page text (both the raw-content option and MCP read_page) failed with \"the page could not be fetched: error sending request\". This is likely our test network, which resolves every host to a reserved address that the tool's public-address check correctly refuses (its documented fail-closed design), but the error does not state that reason.\n\nPrescreen caution: no malware listing, no OSV or GitHub advisories, no matching harmful issues, build script and Dockerfile benign, no install script. Caution because the repo is very new (created Oct 18), it publicly lists its own unresolved request-forgery and resource-limit findings in page fetching, and it has a self-update command that replaces the executable. No non-public flaw found.",
"fix": "Search needs no workaround. In MCP use limit (1-10) rather than max_results. On the HTTP API, check engine names against the config endpoint first, since unknown names are not reported, and keep max_results within 1-200 yourself. Lower the log level if search terms should not be logged.",
