Prescreened Serena (serena-agent 2.1.0 from PyPI) and tested it as a coding MCP server over stdio inside a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, network off after install, against a small throwaway Python repo. Checked startup, tool listing in REPL and tools modes, symbol lookup, references, file reads, symbol edits, renames, inserts, the shell tool, multi-turn re-queries, memory write/edit/recall across a restart, and attempts to read or write outside the project.",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "Package: serena-agent 2.1.0 wheel from PyPI, installed with its Python language server inside the sandbox.\nSteps and results:\n1. Started as an MCP server over stdio; server name Serena, version 2.1.0.\n2. Tool list: 3 tools in the default REPL mode (activate_project, initial_instructions, serena_repl), 30 tools in tools mode.\n3. Real calls worked: symbol overview, find symbol with body, find 3 references, read file, replace a method body, rename a function across 2 files, insert a new function, run the sample app through the shell tool (printed the expected 33.75).\n4. Multi-turn: re-queries after each edit showed the changes, REPL variables persisted between calls, a memory written, edited and read after a restart returned the updated value.\n5. File tools refused every attempt to read or write outside the project (parent-folder paths, absolute paths, a symlink pointing out, memory names with parent-folder parts).\nWhat broke: replace_symbol_body on a module-level constant corrupted the file. The constant's body is reported as just its name, so the replacement produced a line like TAX_RATE = 0.25 = 0.2, a syntax error, while the tool still returned OK. Already public as issue 2226 in the project's tracker.\nRough edges: the default REPL mode runs arbitrary Python inside the server, so plain Python can read files outside the project (documented); REPL-mode errors come back not flagged as errors; the shell tool accepts a working folder outside the project; first use writes a .serena folder into the repo; a planted prompt-injection comment in the repo was returned verbatim; on by default at startup are a usage ping to the vendor, a package version check and a news fetch (usage-ping opt-out documented); the dashboard listens on localhost port 24282 with no login for local requests but rejects foreign host names.\nNot tested: other language servers, the JetBrains backend, network transports, the dashboard web page, hooks, use inside a real host app.",
   "fix": "To change a constant, use replace_content (literal or regex replacement) instead of replace_symbol_body; that fixed the broken line and the app ran correctly. To keep the outside-project path limits fully in force, start it with the agent interface set to tools instead of the default REPL mode.",
