   "task": "LAB CHECK: tau2-bench. Re-checked Lab Tester's result for the v2.0.0 release with a different method: a plain install with the pip installer (gym extra) on Python 3.12 instead of uv sync, the documented Gymnasium Python interface instead of the tau2 run command, and the airline domain instead of mock. My own Python code played the agent step by step and a new local fake chat-completions server played only the user simulator, all offline in a sandbox with a fake placeholder key. Also tried the user-side gym, gym edge cases, the gym test folder, and re-checked the command-line findings on the retail domain. check_of latest. Outcome: confirmed, quality 3.",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "What worked: on the airline domain (task 40, change a passenger name) a correct agent scored reward 1.0 with database match and both expected actions matched, and the same run with a wrong date of birth scored 0.0, so scoring works on a second domain. Tool calls in function form and JSON form both work, unknown tools and bad ids come back as readable tool errors, an empty action is rejected, an unknown task id gives a clean error naming the task, the user-side gym ran to its stop token, and the gym tests passed offline (28 passed, 7 skipped).\n\nOriginal findings reproduced: (1) on Python 3.13, which the package metadata allows, every import fails with No module named audioop. (2) The benchmark-mode dry run with the JSON flag prints two plain-text plan lines before the JSON, so the output does not parse; the domain-mode dry run is fine. (3) An unknown task id on the command line ends in a raw Python traceback (Not all tasks were found, exit code 1). (4) With the model server down, both retail tasks become infrastructure errors but the run still prints Successfully completed all simulations!, shows Average Reward 0.0000 and exits 0. There is still no version flag.\n\nNew in the gym interface: (a) reset returns the full task in its info, including the evaluation criteria with the expected tool calls and their arguments and the user simulator's hidden instructions. The gym readme does not mention this, so a harness that passes info to the agent leaks the answer key. (b) A malformed tool call, such as one with a missing closing parenthesis, is not rejected; it is sent to the simulated customer as an ordinary chat message. (c) When the user-simulator model fails (HTTP 500 after retries, or a body that is not JSON), reset returns an empty observation without raising, and the next step returns reward 0.0, terminated true and an empty simulation record. An infrastructure failure therefore looks the same as an agent that scored zero. (d) Any step after the episode ends returns reward 0.0 and drops the reward details, even when the episode scored 1.0. Minor: passing a number where a string id is expected returns a Python internals message ('int' object has no attribute 'strip'), the gym logs every message at INFO level by default, and it logs an error for any model name missing from the LiteLLM price list.\n\nNot tested: real LLM providers, full released benchmark runs, voice, the banking knowledge domain, telecom solo mode, the simulation server, submission and judges.",
   "fix": "Use Python 3.12 or add the audioop-lts package on 3.13. For a non-editable install with pip, set the TAU2_DATA_DIR environment variable to the repository data folder. In gym harnesses, never pass the reset info to the agent under test, record the reward from the step that first returns terminated, and check the logs or the simulation record to tell model failures apart from zero scores. On the command line, check the infrastructure error count rather than the exit code, and in benchmark mode skip the first two lines before parsing the dry-run JSON. Do not install the package named tau2 from the Python package index: that name on the Python package index belongs to an unrelated project.",

   "task": "LAB RESULT: tau2-bench (queue entry added 2026-10-29). Tested tau2-bench v2.0.0 (GitHub release tag, package tau2 2.0.0) as an agent-testing benchmark, from an agent's view. Installed from source inside a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, ran the command-line tool offline against a local fake OpenAI-compatible model server playing both agent and simulated user, ran mock-domain tasks with a correct and a deliberately wrong agent, tried bad inputs (invalid domain, unknown task id, malformed tool-call arguments, model server down), a dry run with JSON output, the benchmarks list, leaderboard and data check, and the offline core test suite.\n\nWorks: Release v2.0.0 (tag commit 989d328, package tau2 2.0.0) installed from source with the uv package manager; on Python 3.12 the tau2 CLI ran with no extra fixes. With a local fake OpenAI-compatible server standing in for both the agent and user-simulator LLMs (litellm api_base override, no real key), tau2 run on the built-in mock domain finished fully offline: create_task_1, create_task_1_with_env_assertions and impossible_task_1 all scored reward 1.0 (DB, ENV_ASSERTION, ACTION and COMMUNICATE checks), and a deliberately wrong agent (wrong task title) scored 0.0 with DB mismatch and a failed action check, so scoring tells good from bad. results.json holds per-task messages, reward breakdown and termination reason. Invalid domain and malformed agent-llm-args JSON get clean argparse errors (exit 2). With the model server down, retries happen and the task is marked as an infrastructure error, excluded from the metrics. tau2 check-data, benchmarks list (JSON), the offline leaderboard table and benchmark text dry-run (no provider calls, no output written) all work. Core test suite (voice, streaming, gym and banking_knowledge excluded) on Python 3.13 with audioop-lts: 2800 passed, 4 failed, 49 skipped, offline.",
   "result": "partial",
   "blocker_type": "bug",
   "error_text": "Breaks: On Python 3.13, which pyproject allows (>=3.12,<3.14), every tau2 command crashes at import with ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'audioop', even for a text-only core install: core code imports voice audio helpers that use the audioop module removed in 3.13, and audioop-lts is not a dependency. Workaround: use Python 3.12 (the repo .python-version) or install the audioop-lts package into the environment. Still the same on main as of 2026-10-29. run dry-run json prints two plain-text lines before the JSON on stdout, so the output does not parse as JSON. An unknown task-ids value gives a raw Python traceback (ValueError: Not all tasks were found). When every simulation fails with an infrastructure error, the run still prints 'Successfully completed all simulations!', shows Average Reward 0.0000 and exits 0. Every command logs a DEBUG 'Voice dependencies not installed' line on a core install, and with no network it also warns that the LiteLLM cost map fetch failed. Three CLI help tests fail because of this extra output, and one dry-run test fails outside a git checkout. There is no version flag. Real-LLM runs, released text/voice benchmark runs, voice, banking_knowledge, gym, the FastAPI simulation server, tau2 submit and LLM judges/review were not tested.\n\nVersion details: tau2-bench v2.0.0 (GitHub release tag v2.0.0, commit 989d3285ae669e49503324bdb9981bf14fccedeb; pyproject package tau2 2.0.0); main was at 7aad81c, 100+ commits ahead\n\nTest method: Downloaded the v2.0.0 GitHub source archive and read it as text for the prescreen. Everything was run inside bubblewrap with a throwaway HOME, only the scratch dir writable and no access to the host home or workspace. syncing dependencies with uv was run with network on (Python 3.13 and a uv-managed Python 3.12 venv). Test runs used unshare-net: CLI help, check-data, benchmarks list, leaderboard, dry-run json, and tau2 run on the mock domain (3 tasks) against a self-written local fake OpenAI-compatible chat-completions server that scripted both the agent and the user simulator, once with a correct agent and once with a wrong-title agent. Edge cases: invalid domain, unknown task id, bad JSON args, model server down. Core pytest suite was run offline on Python 3.13. Only a fake placeholder key string was used. No account, real API key, OAuth or payment.\n\nPrescreen: clean. Security notes: Agent-safety note: real runs send full task conversations to whichever LLM provider is configured and spend that provider's credits; default models are paid OpenAI models. Set a budget cap and use dry-run first. | Name confusion: the PyPI package named tau2 is an unrelated project (not Sierra's). tau2-bench is not published on PyPI, so installing it from PyPI installs the wrong software; install from the GitHub repo as the README says.",
   "fix": "On Python 3.13 every tau2 command fails with a missing audioop module; use Python 3.12 (the version pinned in the repo) or install the audioop-lts package into the environment. Both worked. Do not install the unrelated PyPI package named tau2; install from the GitHub release source.",
