"task": "LAB CHECK: tool-eval-bench. Re-checked the 3.0.0 release from the published Python package (installed with pip on Python 3.13 in a sandbox) instead of the git tag, using the native Anthropic Messages route instead of the OpenAI-compatible one, against a local fake Messages server with a dummy key. Tried a good model, a prose-only model, all-500, all-529 overload, an intermittent mid-scenario 500, a wire-format mismatch, three trials, the history command and the Python API. check_of: latest. Outcome: confirmed. Quality: 3.",

"error_text": "What works: the Anthropic Messages route sends the right version header, streams by default, parses streamed tool-use blocks and scores TC-01 as pass 100 for a correct weather call and fail 0 for a prose-only reply. Overload (HTTP 529) replies are retried with backoff. The preflight stops cleanly when a listed model returns 500 or 529. The Python run_benchmark function with scenario objects and the Anthropic wire format returns the versioned result (final score 100, Excellent). Trials and the history table work.\n\nWhat broke (confirmed from the original test, now on the Anthropic route): when every request returns HTTP 500 with the preflight turned off, the scenario is tagged server_error and listed as excluded with completion rate 0.0, but the run still reports final score 0, rating Poor and exit code 0. The methodology doc says infrastructure failures are dropped rather than counted as zero. The same happens with persistent 529 overload after retries. A single transient 500 on the second turn of a scenario is not retried and wipes out that scenario. A listed model that fails the preflight with 500 or 529 exits with code 3 (model_not_available), while the CLI reference lists code 3 only for no models found. Error summaries also mask the host of the unrelated documentation link, not just the endpoint.\n\nNew: when a server answers HTTP 200 in the wrong wire format (an Anthropic-shaped body on the OpenAI chat route, which is what you get if the format is left on auto for a local address), the run grades it as the model failing (missing_step, score 0, exit 0) instead of reporting a malformed or mismatched response.\n\nNot tested: real models, the hosted Anthropic service, the Gemini adapter, throughput, needle, speculative decoding and decision benchmarks, the accuracy plugins, Docker, cards, resume and export.",
"fix": "Leave the preflight on so a failing endpoint exits with an error instead of a zero score, and before trusting a 0 score check excluded_scenarios and completion_rate in the JSON output. Set the wire format explicitly (anthropic for Messages-style servers) rather than relying on auto detection for local addresses.",

"task": "LAB RESULT: tool-eval-bench (added 2026-10-29). Built tool-eval-bench from the v3.0.0 release tag in a sandbox with a throwaway home and no account, then ran it against a local fake OpenAI-compatible model server with a dummy key. Tried: a correct tool call versus a prose-only reply on scenario TC-01, malformed tool-call arguments, an unknown scenario id, an unreachable server, a server returning HTTP 500 on every request, the probe and dry-run commands, a 15-scenario short run, the safety category, the Python run_benchmark function and the local web UI. Prescreen was clean. Quality 3. Works: Installs from the v3.0.0 tag with no account. Against a local fake OpenAI-compatible server (dummy key): TC-01 scores pass/100 for a correct get_weather call and fail/0 for a prose-only reply. Malformed tool-call arguments are logged ('Could not repair malformed tool-call arguments') and the loop stops after 3 identical turns. Errors come back as clean JSON events: unknown scenario gives invalid_arguments, exit 2; unreachable server gives connection_failed, exit 2. --json prints valid JSON on stdout, --json-file plus JSONL progress events on stderr work, and so do probe (exit 0 if ready, 1 if not), --dry-run (69 standard / 28 hard mode / 97 scenarios, matching the README), the Python run_benchmark() API and the token-protected local web UI. Good for an agent that wants to grade an LLM endpoint's tool calling in CI. It is a CLI and Python library, not an MCP server.",

"error_text": "Package details: built from git tag v3.0.0, commit d85126ee2a812e8acaf046ec8c0ad0446b9ebbbe, same version as on PyPI. What broke: If the server returns HTTP 500 on every request (with --no-preflight), both scenarios are marked failure_kind server_error and completion_rate is 0.0 with every scenario in excluded_scenarios. The run still reports final_score 0 and rating '★ Poor' and exits 0, which conflicts with the docs saying infra failures are not counted as zero; it should be null or an error. A model that is listed but returns 500 on the preflight exits 3 (model_not_available), but the docs list exit 3 only as 'No models found on server'. URL redaction also hides the host of a non-endpoint docs link in error summaries (a Mozilla docs link for HTTP status 500 shows up with its host replaced by three asterisks). Passing scenario IDs as strings to run_benchmark(scenarios=...) crashes with AttributeError: 'str' object has no attribute 'id' (the docs ask for definition objects). Not tested: real models or GPUs, the perf/throughput (llama-benchy), needle, spec-decode, decision-model, HF accuracy plugins (GSM8K/MMLU/IFEval need downloads), Gemini/Anthropic adapters, Docker, PNG cards, resume, and the PyPI wheel (built from the git tag instead).",
"fix": "For the all-requests-failed case, check completion_rate and excluded_scenarios in the JSON output before trusting final_score; a completion_rate of 0 means the score is meaningless. Pass scenario definition objects, not id strings, to run_benchmark.",
