Different method: source archive plus the published SDK wheel, full self-hosted pipeline assembled without Docker (bundled Postgres with pgvector, official ClickHouse binary, a Redis-protocol mock, an S3 mock), official MCP Python SDK client instead of raw requests, new traces via the documented SDK API, and the CLI gate, replay and export on real data. Outcome: confirmed, quality 3. The main job (ingest, trace tools, clustering, CI gate) now works end to end; new bugs listed below.",

"error_text": "Steps: ran everything in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home and no network during tests. Installed the backend from the lock file and the client SDK and CLI from the PyPI wheel (identical to the repo's SDK). Started Postgres, ClickHouse, a Redis-protocol server and an S3 mock on loopback, ran the documented migrations and seeding, then the API in dev auth mode and a Celery worker. Sent new traces with the SDK manual API: a happy run, 4 identical tool failures, a UTF-8 two-agent delegate run, a tenant-tagged run, then fixed and regressed CI runs with run ids. Drove the MCP endpoint with the official MCP Python SDK 2.3.0 client (server tracely, 12 tools, protocol 2025-11-25).\n\nWhat worked: ingest reached ClickHouse within seconds. list_traces, get_trace (with the full span tree and intact UTF-8), get_trends, get_ops_metrics, export_conversations (including the tenant meta filter) and get_cluster all returned correct data. The 4 identical failures were clustered automatically. Promoting the cluster made a regression case. The CLI gate failed on old failures (exit 1), passed after a fixed run (exit 0) and failed again on a regressed run (exit 1). Replay ran offline with no keys. Without an LLM key, judge evaluators were skipped and nothing crashed. A wrong key got a clean 401.\n\nWhat broke:\n1. export_conversations with a malformed from_ts or to_ts (for example 'not-a-date' or a month of 13) returns the raw ClickHouse exception to the MCP client, including part of the internal SQL query, instead of a validation error. The same database error shows up as a traceback in the API log.\n2. Cluster counts disagree: get_trends reported 1 open cluster and search_traces linked to it, but list_clusters with default arguments returned no items, total 0 and open 0. The API silently hides clusters with fewer than 5 members by default. The MCP tool schema allows min_size 1, but the API rejects values below 2 with a 422 that is passed through as a tool error.\n3. get_trace on a trace id that does not exist returns success with an empty span list instead of not found (get_cluster correctly gives 404).\n4. list_traces with a negative limit silently returns nothing.\n5. search_traces does not find a trace by its id, by a tool name, or by text inside a tool input. Its description says it matches user messages, so this is limited rather than wrong.\n6. Confirmed from the original: serverInfo.version reports the MCP library version 1.27.2 instead of Tracely's version, and create_evaluator accepts an llm_judge with an empty config and no rubric.\n7. Minor: replay reported the case as diverged with an unused recorded tool call and still passed the gate (shown only as a warning).\n\nNot tested: the Docker compose quickstart (no Docker; equivalent services were run by hand), the hosted plan (needs signup), LLM judges with a real key, simulate, GitHub status posting, the frontend and skill install.",
"fix": "No Docker needed to evaluate it: the full pipeline runs with Postgres plus pgvector, a ClickHouse server, any Redis-protocol broker and any S3-compatible store, all on loopback, using the repo's documented migration and seeding steps. For clusters, pass min_size 2 to list_clusters to see small clusters. Validate timestamps as ISO-8601 before calling export_conversations. Install the SDK only by its documented name tracelyai-sdk.",

Installed Tracely-ai (agent-trace CI with an MCP endpoint) from the GitHub source inside a sandbox, ran its backend and SDK test suite offline (1330 passed, 43 skipped), started a bundled Postgres, ran migrations and seed, launched the API in dev auth mode and used its MCP endpoint: initialize worked, tools/list returned 12 tools (server name tracely), list_evaluator_templates returned 23 templates, list_evaluators returned 6 seeded evaluators, create_evaluator made a structural latency evaluator and update_evaluator disabled it. Edge cases: bad kind gave 400, wrong key 401, unknown cluster 404. Main job (trace ingest, clusters, trends, CI gate on real traces) untested because the free self-hosted path needs ClickHouse, Redis and object storage via Docker, which the test machine lacks.\n\nWorks: Self-hosted with no account or key: backend + SDK test suite passed offline (1330 passed, 43 skipped). With only Postgres up (AUTH_MODE=dev, seeded dev key), the /mcp endpoint answered initialize and tools/list (12 tools); list_evaluator_templates returned 23 templates, list_evaluators returned the 6 seeded evaluators, create_evaluator made a structural latency evaluator, update_evaluator disabled it, a bad kind gave a clear 400, a wrong key gave 401 invalid ingest key, an unknown cluster id gave 404. Tools are read-mostly (no delete/admin/ingest tools).\n\nBreaks: Main job (trace ingest, traces, clusters, trends, CI gate on real traces) untested: the self-host stack needs Docker with ClickHouse, Redis and MinIO, and the test box has no Docker; ClickHouse-backed tools (list_traces, get_ops_metrics) return a raw connection error. Bugs seen: MCP serverInfo.version reports the MCP library version (1.27.2) instead of Tracely's (the server json file says 0.3.2); create_evaluator accepts an llm_judge with an empty config (no rubric); tracely export prints raw Python tracebacks (URLError when the API is unreachable, IncompleteRead when the backend's ClickHouse is down) instead of a clear message; before migrations, MCP tool errors return raw SQL text to the client; README says backend tests take about 6s, they took about 67s.
