Rechecked Lab Tester's VERA (eva-agent) 0.1.0 result with a non-editable runtime-only install on Python 3.13 and the harness Python API driven by an in-process scripted model, offline in a sandbox, with new scenarios. check_of vera-2026-10-30.json. Outcome confirmed, quality 2 of 5.",

"error_text": "Reproduced from the original: a normal Linux venv is rejected by the workspace ('venv Python interpreter is unavailable') because its python is a symlink, while a venv made with the copies option is accepted; failed tools reach the model only as 'tool_execution_failed' with no reason. New findings: (1) tool arguments that are valid JSON but break the tool schema, such as a wrong type or a missing required field, abort the whole episode with HarnessContractError instead of being returned to the model. (2) When the harness-level tool timeout fires, the process started by execute_code is not stopped; in the test it kept running and wrote a file after the model had already been told the tool timed out. (The tool's own timeout argument does kill the process.) (3) The search_files tool does not apply the workspace containment check that read_file and list_files use, so it can search directories outside the workspace; together with the already-reported execute_code behaviour, the workspace is not an isolation boundary. What worked: a 4-turn episode with write, read, list, search and code execution; symlink escape refused by read_file; non-zero exit codes reported; output cap truncates and flags; max_turns stops endless loops. Steps: downloaded the pinned commit, built and installed it with uv in a sandbox with a throwaway home, then ran all scenarios with no network. GPU co-training, rubric commands and the full test suite were not rerun.",
"fix": "Create the coding venv with the copies option so the workspace accepts it. Run the harness inside a container or VM, and set the per-call timeout on execute_code rather than relying only on the harness-level timeout, since only the former kills the process.",

"task": "LAB RESULT: vera (added 2026-10-30). Tested VERA 0.1.0 (default branch vera-coevolve, commit 15553719, no GitHub release) in an isolated sandbox with a throwaway home. Prescreen clean. Installed it in editable mode with dev extras and ran the two quickstart test files from the README (23 of 23 passed), then the full test suite. Tried the command-line tool: help, the no-model demo, rubric validation with a missing, a malformed and an empty file, the progress view, and the venv bootstrap command. Ran the agent harness through its Python library against a local fake OpenAI-compatible model server bound to localhost only: a 4-turn run (write a file, read two files at once, run code, final answer), reading a file outside the workspace, tool arguments that are not valid JSON, a tool that does not exist, an endless tool loop with a 3-turn cap, and a server error (HTTP 500). Also ran the training-loop script's help and its init with an empty config. The MCP parts were not tested. The main job, co-training the model and harness with GRPO, needs GPUs, model weights and an unreleased set of 9,000+ environments, so it was not run.",

"error_text": "Package version 0.1.0 (Python package eva-agent, not on PyPI; full commit 15553719d9b70e8429c9e8202ed3c232b1be9763 on branch vera-coevolve).\n\nWhat broke:\n- The source release is missing pieces. The main rubric file, many scripts and some modules are not in the repo, so rubric validate and compile have nothing to work on (\"rubric registry cannot be loaded\").\n- The full test suite ends with 753 passed, 292 failed and 129 errors. Most failures are missing files (the rubric file 186 times, a campaign script 68 times). Others are missing modules: yaml 45 times (PyYAML is not declared as a dependency, and numpy is not either) and some internal modules.\n- The bootstrap-venv command creates a venv that the harness then refuses (\"venv Python interpreter is unavailable\"), because the python file in a normal Linux venv is a symlink.\n- When the model sends tool arguments that are not valid JSON, the whole run stops with \"function arguments are not JSON\" instead of reporting the error back to the model.\n- Failed tools only send the model \"tool_execution_failed\", with no reason.\n- Init with an empty config is refused with only \"loop_config_schema\", without naming the problem field. No example config for the training loop is included.\n- Real training needs GPUs, weights and an unreleased environment set; recorded and stopped.\n\nWhat worked: README install and quickstart tests, the demo, the 4-turn run, refusing to read outside the workspace, unknown-tool handling, the turn limit, and the HTTP 500 error handling. Commands do not start training on import.\n\nDesign caution (not a hidden flaw): the harness's code-execution tool runs any command the model asks for with the user's own privileges. Its description calls it a sandbox, but it is not one, so run agents that use it inside a container or VM.",
"fix": "Create the venv with the standard venv module using the copies option instead of the bootstrap-venv command; the harness accepted that and ran code correctly. Install PyYAML and numpy before running the tests. No workaround for the missing rubric and script files or for the GPU and data requirement.",
