Getting an iOS app ready for iPhone Duo (guide for coding agents)
For coding agents helping a human get an iOS app ready for iPhone Duo, Apple's foldable (on sale October 23, 2026). Built only from Apple's own developer pages, paraphrased, with links. Nothing here was tested hands-on: we read the docs, we did not run Xcode.
In 30 seconds
- Every app runs on iPhone Duo, but only apps built with the iOS 27 SDK or later resize with the fold; iOS 27.1 SDK builds use the full display and get vertical toolbars and tab bars.
- Start with Apple's app resizability skill: in Xcode, ask the coding assistant to “get my app ready for iPhone Duo”. Other agents:
xcrun agent skills export. Apple says it finds most issues, not all. - Fix sizing from
UIScreen.main, layout based on orientation, device checks by idiom, size class or exact pixel sizes, and full-bleed media. - Test with the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1 (Apple calls it the best way to test the full native experience), the resizable simulator in Device Hub, and iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27.
- App Store: iPhone Duo screenshots earn an “optimized for iPhone Duo” badge, and they become required in April 2027 (details).
What changes by SDK
| App built with | On iPhone Duo (per Apple) |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 SDK or earlier | Runs, but doesn't adapt to all layouts. Open: the app sits in the center of the display with empty space around the window. Closed: the outer display shows the app to the left of the status bar and camera. (Apple's overview article: built with Xcode 26 or earlier, the app doesn't extend under the status bar and camera.) |
| iOS 27 SDK | Resizes dynamically: fills most of the inner display when unfolded, returns to the outer display when folded, but still avoids the status bar on the right edge. |
| iOS 27.1 SDK or later (Xcode 27.1) | Optimized for iPhone Duo: uses the full display, with toolbars and tab bars shown vertically below the status bar. Apple: before shipping a 27.1 SDK build, make sure your content adapts to the bars becoming vertical (below). |
Step 1: run Apple's app resizability skill
- In Xcode: ask the coding assistant to “get my app ready for iPhone Duo.” Per Apple, the skill scans the project for the patterns in Step 2, and for each issue it explains the problem and suggests a fix.
- Another coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and so on): Apple says to export the skill by running this in Terminal on the Mac:
xcrun agent skills export
- Apple: the skill “finds most issues, but not all of them.” Use the Step 2 list to review what it flags and to catch what it misses.
- Apple's page doesn't say where the export is written or which agents can load it. Check the command's own output and help on the Mac; don't guess a path.
- Our entry for the skill: Apple iPhone Duo resizability skill (docs reviewed, not hands-on tested).
Step 2: patterns to fix (Apple's list)
Stop sizing from the main screen
The app's size changes on every fold and unfold and doesn't always match the screen. Search for UIScreen.main and replace each use:
- Size from the view or window:
UIScreen.main.bounds→view.boundsorwindow.bounds. SwiftUI:GeometryReaderoronGeometryChange. - Re-read the size when it changes: reading it once at launch or in
viewIsAppearingisn't enough, because a fold can resize the app mid-session. Do size-dependent layout inlayoutSubviewsorviewDidLayoutSubviews; useviewWillTransition(to:with:)for work that must run on a size change. - Scale from the trait collection:
traitCollection.displayScale(UIKit) or@Environment(\.displayScale)(SwiftUI). - Windows from a scene:
UIWindow(frame: UIScreen.main.bounds)→UIWindow(windowScene:). - Don't store a
UIScreen: read it when needed withview.window?.windowScene?.screen.
Don't make layout decisions from orientation
On iPhone Duo, device orientation doesn't tell you the app's shape. Find these and remove layout logic that depends on them:
UIDevice.current.orientationstatusBarOrientationinterfaceOrientation, includingwindowScene.effectiveGeometry.interfaceOrientation
To know if the app is wider than tall, compare width and height of the space you have: view.bounds in a view controller, superview.bounds in a view, or the GeometryReader size in SwiftUI.
Don't assume idiom or size class identifies the device
With iPhone Duo and resizable iPhone Mirroring, an iPhone app can get any combination of size classes. Apple: on the inner display the app should look like a natural extension of its iPad layout.
- No layout by idiom: search for
userInterfaceIdiom == .phoneand== .pad; base layout on size classes or available space. - “Regular width” is not “iPad”: code that shows an iPad-only layout when
horizontalSizeClass == .regular, or assumes iPhone is always compact, will now run that layout on iPhone too. - No exact device sizes: checks like
bounds.height == 844or a list of known iPhone sizes won't match iPhone Duo. - Full-bleed media: hero images and video with
.scaleAspectFillor.aspectRatio(contentMode: .fill)can lose important content on wider displays. Choose fill or fit from the current size classes or aspect ratio, or set a focal point.
rg -n 'UIScreen\.main|UIDevice\.current\.orientation|statusBarOrientation|interfaceOrientation|userInterfaceIdiom|horizontalSizeClass|scaleAspectFill|contentMode: \.fill|bounds\.(height|width) ==' --glob '*.swift' --glob '*.m' --glob '*.mm'
Also in Apple's overview article
- Prefer system layouts and containers (split views, tab bars, arrangement views, navigation stacks); size views relative to their container; use scene or containing-view bounds, not screen dimensions; adopt Auto Layout in UIKit; track
horizontalSizeClassandverticalSizeClasschanges with automatic trait tracking. - Reserved regions (the fold, and the front cameras that can cover content): SwiftUI
GeometryProxy.reservedRegions(kind:options:layoutDirectionBehavior:), UIKitUIView.reservedRegions(kind:options:). A region can be active or inactive (the fold is active when partially open, inactive when fully open). - Arrangement views for a primary plus secondary view across poses: SwiftUI
ArrangementView, UIKitUIArrangementViewController, with split or overlay styles. Apple advises against putting one inside a navigation split view, list or scroll view. - Camera apps (AVKit / AVFoundation): the app can move between displays and the camera in use can end up facing the other way; see Apple's article linked from the overview.
Vertical toolbars and tab bars (iOS 27.1 SDK)
- When: on the outer display when closed, and for some views in the leading or trailing position on the inner display when open. Navigation bars, toolbars and tab bars are shown together on the side of the display in some poses.
- Bars not going vertical? Use the bar support of navigation containers: SwiftUI
toolbar(content:)on aNavigationStackorNavigationSplitView; UIKit, set toolbar items on a view controller inside a navigation controller instead of a customUIToolbar,UINavigationBarorUITabBar. - Exceptions: inspectors stay horizontal; in a split view, sidebar and content bars are horizontal and the detail view's are vertical; sheets on the outer display go vertical by default, which you can turn off with
toolbarVerticalBehavior(_:)(SwiftUI) orpreferredVerticalBarBehavior(UIKit). - Custom views can check whether bars are vertical:
toolbarVerticalEdgeenvironment value (SwiftUI) or theverticalBarEdgetrait (UIKit). Extend hero or background images under a vertical bar withbackgroundExtensionEffect()orUIBackgroundExtensionView. - Item order: primary navigation (Back, Close) at the top, then prominent actions such as Done. Use semantic placements:
topBarPinnedTrailing/pinnedTrailingGroupfor Done;cancellationAction/leadingItemGroupsfor a custom Back or Close. - Give items an icon and a title. Vertical bars show icons only; items with only a title, or with a custom view, are not shown vertically. Control this with
axisBehavior, overflow order withvisibilityPriority, and put items straight into overflow withToolbarOverflowMenu(SwiftUI) oradditionalOverflowItems(UIKit).
Step 3: test resizing
- iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1: Apple calls it the best way to test the full native experience.
- Resizable iOS simulator in Device Hub: Apple's news post says Device Hub shows how the app behaves on iPhone Duo across all poses and orientations.
- iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27: resize the window to extreme sizes in both directions.
- Check both displays closed, open and partially folded, rotate in each pose, and walk every view, sheet and popover: awkward positions after a fold, and controls stuck in the fold.
- Previews: the canvas overrides picker has a new Display group for previewing on a device's alternative display.
Known simulator limits (Xcode 27.1 release notes):
- The first Simulator launch can take several minutes.
- StandBy is unavailable in the iPhone Duo Simulator runtime.
- Running and debugging most app extensions is unavailable in the iPhone Duo Simulator runtime.
- An app using
CameraCaptureAccessorycan use both displays at once without an active camera capture session in the simulator. - Mac Catalyst: projects using iOS 27.1-only APIs show compile errors when building for Mac Catalyst (isolate them with
#if !targetEnvironment(macCatalyst)), and projects targeting iOS 27.1 show no Mac Catalyst run destination (add a Mac Catalyst 27.0 minimum deployment).
App Store: screenshots, badge, April 2027
- Badge: submit iPhone Duo screenshots in App Store Connect and the product page shows a badge saying the app is optimized for iPhone Duo.
- Screenshot sizes: outer display 1398 × 2034 or 2034 × 1398 px; inner display 2007 × 2853 or 2853 × 2007 px.
- Requirement from April 2027. Apple words it two ways: the news post says any app or game submitted from April 2027 needs iPhone Duo screenshots; the screenshot specifications page says they will be required for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later. Check the current wording before a submission.
- Preview tool: App Store Connect has a new preview tool showing how screenshots, product page headers and other assets look on iPhone Duo.
- Featuring: a featuring nomination can say the app is optimized for iPhone Duo, including support for all device poses (Helpful Details section).
- Per Apple's news post of October 5, 2026, iPhone Duo optimized apps and games can already be submitted in App Store Connect.
