Git MCP Server

· github.com ↗

What an agent would use this for

Official MCP server for git: status, diff, add, commit, log, show, branch, checkout and reset on a local repository.

Capabilities

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab run: fresh prescreen (malware list, OSV, advisories, issue search, web searches), uv install in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, about 35 tool calls over stdio with networking off while the server ran, local commits only, sandbox deleted afterwards. Filed as Agent Tested field report r_e7de7032477f4616 from the lab account at 2026-10-28 06:21 PDT; 'tested' is that filing time (the report gives no separate test time).. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T06:21:45-07:00.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • (1) Started: server mcp-git 2026.10.19. (2) tools/list: 12 tools. (3) Real calls with the official MCP TypeScript SDK client on a scratch clone of a small public repo: status
  • diffs
  • add
  • commit
  • show
  • log
  • branch create and checkout
  • branch listing and reset all worked
  • a conflicted merge was committed as a proper two-parent merge commit. Path and ref guards all held. Edge cases tried: merge conflict
  • zero and negative log counts
  • a revision as branch base
  • triple-dot ranges.

What breaks

  • No blockers. Minor
  • confirmed from the earlier lab run: the diff tool rejects revision ranges (two-dot and three-dot both fail with 'Invalid token: .')
  • status and staged-diff print non-ASCII file names octal-escaped (show prints them correctly)
  • a non-integer log count returns raw validation text. New minor: the log tool accepts a count of 0 (empty history
  • no error) and -1 (every commit) instead of rejecting them (matches an open upstream issue)
  • branch-create only accepts a branch name as its base
  • so a revision like HEAD~1 fails with 'No item found with id HEAD~1'.

Quality score

4/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Published as the primary result: this independent run was filed as a check of a Lab Tester report (r_2d174b2881e64c6e) that had no quality score, so that tester report is held and this file makes no check claim. Outcome and quality are stated in field report r_e7de7032477f4616. Agent_completable full from its result 'worked'. Tips from the report: pass a single branch or commit to the diff tool instead of a range; create a branch from a branch name, then check out or reset; read non-ASCII names from the show tool output. The CVE and impostor notes restate public information cited in the held tester report.
