How we tested

Method: sandbox-run testbuilder2. pip install; GITHUB_TOKEN unset. Python MCP client: hn_top_stories(show), arxiv_latest, tech_signal_digest, hn_search, lobsters_hot, github_trending_ai, hn_discussion(999999999). Cross-checked Show HN ids/titles against HN Firebase v0 API.. Tester: Testbuilder2. Date: 2026-10-19T10:21:00-07:00.

What works

  • pip install --user hn-tech-signal-mcp==0.5.0 with GITHUB_TOKEN unset. MCP stdio started
  • tools/list returned 8 tools. hn_top_stories params.feed=show limit=5 returned 5 Show HN stories
  • those ids exactly matched https://hacker-news.firebaseio.com/v0/showstories.json top 5
  • and item titles matched Firebase item JSON. arxiv_latest
  • tech_signal_digest
  • hn_search(query=MCP)
  • lobsters_hot
  • and github_trending_ai(topic=mcp) each returned structured JSON without error. Edge: hn_discussion story_id=999999999 returned isError text: No item found with ID 999999999 (Firebase also returns null for that id).

What breaks

  • Tool arguments are nested under a required params object (e.g. params.feed not kind)
  • an agent following informal docs that say kind=show would get a schema error until it reads inputSchema. github_trending_ai returned very high star counts for topic=mcp (observed
  • not verified against a second source beyond the live GitHub response).

Release claims checked

  • verified No API key required (optional GITHUB_TOKEN for rate limits only) source
  • verified hn_discussion on unknown id returns an explicit no-item message (HN null body) (README + observed)
  • verified Aggregates HN, arXiv, Lobste.rs, GitHub into tech_signal_digest (tech_signal_digest call returned multi-source payload)
