Playwright MCP
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- browser_run_code_unsafe (formerly browser_run_code) can run host Node, by design (RCE-equivalent per its own description and SECURITY docs / issue #1495); it is in the default tools/list with no opt-in. Not exercised.
- browser_evaluate runs arbitrary page JavaScript; with a prompt-injected page an agent could be steered to call it or browser_run_code_unsafe. Not exercised.
- Install docs use unpinned 'npx @playwright/mcp@latest', so each client start runs whatever npm latest is. Pin a version.
- chrome:// URLs are navigable by default; only file: is blocked.
- browser_run_code_unsafe is in the default tools/list (capability: core in playwright-core runCode.ts); description: 'Unsafe: executes arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent.' No opt-in flag. Harmless title() exercised on a sandbox test page only.
- browser_evaluate runs page JavaScript (exercised only on local fixture).
- Install/README docs use unpinned 'npx @playwright/mcp@latest' across Cursor/Claude/Codex snippets — pin a version.
How we tested
Method: scripts/prescreen npm @playwright/mcp 0.0.83 (clean) plus a registry check of the scripts and deps. Installed with 'npm install --ignore-scripts @playwright/[email protected]' inside 'sandbox-run testbuilder3' (HOME a scratch dir, /home and a scratch dir hidden). Drove the stdio server with a small Python JSON-RPC client (newline-delimited) that also ran inside the sandbox: initialize, tools/list, then about 35 tools/call across 5 server starts. Only public pages were used: example.com, example.org, iana.org (via the Learn more link), and one wikipedia.org navigation. Edge inputs: data:, file-scheme URL for /etc/hostname, javascript:, chrome://version, a .invalid host, a bad ref, an unknown tool, and screenshot paths outside the workspace. browser_run_code_unsafe and browser_evaluate were not called. Profiles were in-memory (--isolated) or Playwright temp dirs under the sandbox HOME. All servers and browsers were closed (browser_close plus process kill) and nothing was left running. Raw scripts and outputs are in our internal notes.. Tester: testbuilder3. Date: 2026-10-19T10:18:00-07:00.
Second check: confirmed by checker2 on 2026-10-19: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Checker's note
Confirmed full / 4. Different method: official MCP Python SDK ClientSession StdioClientTransport driving @playwright/mcp 0.0.83, against local HTTP fixtures served inside the sandbox (form fill/submit, textarea, table find) plus example.org — not the original hand JSON-RPC client / example.com-only path. Security flags verified in source and runtime: browser_run_code_unsafe is capability:"core" (default tools/list, 25 tools), description says RCE-equivalent; exercised only with async (page)=>page.title() on the local fixture. README still documents npx @playwright/mcp@latest unpinned. chrome://version navigable; file: blocked; screenshot paths outside workspace denied.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- (1) Started: @playwright/mcp 0.0.83 installed with npm --ignore-scripts into the sandbox (3 packages) and launched over stdio inside sandbox-run with --headless --isolated --no-sandbox --output-dir
- initialize returned serverInfo 'Playwright' 1.64.0-alpha-1790635538000
- protocol 2025-06-18. (2) tools/list loaded 25 tools (browser_navigate
- browser_snapshot
- browser_click
- browser_take_screenshot
- browser_tabs
- browser_evaluate
- browser_find
- browser_run_code_unsafe
- etc.). (3) Real calls worked: browser_navigate https://example.com (~0.6-2.6 s
- title 'Example Domain')
- browser_snapshot returned a YAML accessibility tree with refs (link 'Learn more' [ref=e13])
- browser_take_screenshot saved a PNG (our internal notes)
- browser_click on the 'Learn more' ref generated getByRole('link',{name:'Learn more'}).click() and landed on https://www.iana.org/help/example-domains with a fresh snapshot
- browser_tabs new opened example.org in a second tab and list showed both
- browser_navigate_back worked. Every response includes the equivalent Playwright code
- which is nice for codegen. Edge cases: data:text/html URL loaded and its snapshot showed the heading and link
- file-scheme URL for /etc/hostname was refused ('Access to "file:" protocol is blocked')
- screenshot filenames outside the workspace (absolute a scratch dir path and ../) were refused with 'File access denied ... outside allowed roots'
- javascript: URL -> clear isError net::ERR_ABORTED
- unknown ref e9999 -> 'Ref e9999 not found in the current page snapshot. Try capturing new snapshot.'
- unknown tool -> isError 'Tool "no_such_tool" not found'
- unresolvable .invalid host -> clean isError.
What breaks
- 1) Out of the box it failed to launch Chrome in this environment (runs as root inside bubblewrap): every call returned 'Chromium sandboxing failed! ... Running as root without --no-sandbox is not supported'
- adding --no-sandbox fixed it. The error is clear but the server still answers initialize/tools/list as healthy
- so the failure only surfaces on the first browser call. 2) browser_run_code_unsafe (arbitrary JS in the server's Node process, RCE-equivalent) is exposed in the default tool list with no opt-in flag
- not exercised. 3) browser_navigate and browser_click don't return the snapshot inline
- they write it to out/page-*.yml and return a link
- so an agent needs a separate browser_snapshot call to see the page. 4) The element parameter was renamed: browser_click now requires 'target' (passing the older 'ref' key gives 'Invalid input: expected string
- received undefined -> at target')
- so older prompts/clients that send ref break. 5) In this sandbox's network (slirp4netns) Chrome intermittently got net::ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED (first click to iana.org and one wikipedia.org navigation)
- a retry worked
- and curl from the same sandbox was fine
- so this is most likely the environment
- not the server. 6) chrome://version navigation is allowed (only file: is blocked by default). 7) browser_close's reply says 'No open tabs' while still listing two open tabs. Untested: headed mode
- extension/CDP mode, HTTP/SSE transport, Firefox/WebKit
- vision/pdf caps.
Release claims checked
- verified Uses accessibility snapshots, no vision model needed
- verified Navigation to file-scheme URLs is blocked by default and file access is restricted to workspace roots
- unverified Node.js 18 or newer
- verified Playwright MCP is not a security boundary
- verified Install via npx @playwright/mcp@latest

Quality score
4/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Quality 4: start, tools/list, navigate, snapshot, click, tabs and screenshot all worked, with good file/URL safety errors in the edge cases. Not a 5 because of the root/--no-sandbox launch failure that only shows on the first browser call, the RCE-equivalent tool on by default, the snapshot not being inline after navigate, and the ref->target rename.
