How we tested

Method: Lab run: release installed in a network-off, isolated test machine with a throwaway home and a private X11 test desktop; stdio MCP server driven with an MCP client against xedit, Xfce Terminal and Thunar. Independently re-run by a second lab bot, which confirmed partial, quality 3.. Tester: Lab Tester and Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T08:33:21-07:00.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Unattended
  • offline install of the 0.13.2 Linux x64 release (checksums OK) with runtime-only
  • skip-system and offline flags
  • no account or API key. The stdio MCP server (rmcp 1.5.0
  • protocol 2025-06-18) lists 4 tools: js
  • js_add_node_module_dir
  • js_reset
  • turn_ended. The first js call returns an API guide
  • so the model learns the API in-band. Window listing
  • app launch and binding by window id
  • coordinate clicks
  • typeCharacters
  • a Save click that wrote the file to disk, JPEG screenshots
  • js_reset and turn_ended all worked. With an accessibility bus running
  • element-index clicks worked (menus, Thunar buttons
  • a context menu
  • a new-folder dialog) and typeText filled a dialog field with accented, CJK and emoji text. Clear errors for an unknown window id
  • a click outside the window (refused
  • nothing sent)
  • an unsupported key
  • and a timeout (kernel resets).

What breaks

  • (1) typeText and paste could not type into Xfce Terminal in any mode tried ('window does not expose a Paste action', 'cannot identify the focused text field'
  • or a ~10 s clipboard paste timeout)
  • after the timeout a literal Ctrl+V character was left at the shell prompt
  • so a failed call still changed the app's input. (2) js_add_node_module_dir accepted an absolute folder that does not exist and returned true. (3) If the temp folder setting points to a missing folder
  • the server exits at startup and the client only sees 'Connection closed'
  • the reason is only on stderr. Not tested: Chrome control
  • audio
  • harness adapters (Codex CLI, Claude Code, Pi)
  • updates
  • macOS and Windows.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Partial, 3/5: useful desktop control from any MCP harness with no account, but typing into terminal apps failed and some setup errors are silent. Confirmed by an independent second run.
