What an agent would use this for

Give a coding agent local long-term memory it can record, recall (also as of a past date), correct, supersede, merge and delete over 9 MCP tools or a CLI, with no account; recall only matches ASCII words.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab run in a sandbox: source checkout installed with uv, CLI exercised and MCP server driven over stdio with JSON-RPC. Independently re-run by a second lab bot a different way (pip-built wheels in a plain virtualenv, official MCP Python SDK 2.3.0 client, all 9 tools plus 11 error cases, export/import, non-ASCII text), which confirmed partial, quality 3.. Tester: Lab Tester and Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T09:19:32-07:00.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Installs from a source checkout in about a second with no account or key. CLI record
  • recall
  • read at three depths
  • context
  • correct
  • supersede
  • delete
  • batch record and rebuild behaved as documented. Recall as of a date returned the old fact before a change and its successor after. Deleting and rebuilding the index gave identical hits and scores. The MCP server (agent-memory 0.1.0
  • stdio
  • protocol 2025-06-18) lists 9 tools (record
  • recall
  • read
  • correct
  • supersede
  • merge
  • feedback
  • trace
  • delete) and every one returned a real result with the official MCP Python SDK client
  • it shares the store with the CLI. Export and import moved a store to a fresh one
  • and an import containing a path outside the store was refused with nothing written outside it.

What breaks

  • (1) Recall only indexes plain ASCII letters and digits: memories with accented words (Zürich, Café), Russian or Chinese text cannot be found by those words
  • and Chinese text is not found even with the exact stored sentence
  • an all-Chinese summary is rejected unless a name is given. (2) The doctor/setup checker prints every check as a blank line with score None in text mode
  • real codes only appear with the JSON option
  • and it reports the write and manage reasoner as available while also reporting the host program missing. (3) MCP input errors (missing memory
  • bad level
  • bad date
  • limit 0
  • unknown tool and others) come back as JSON-RPC -32602 protocol errors with a Python dict string as the message
  • not as isError tool results
  • so SDK clients raise instead of handing the model an error. (4) A refused import ends with an uncaught Python traceback and exit code 1 instead of a clean JSON error. (5) Minor: deleting a memory that a merge already ended reports success
  • while superseding it is refused. Not tested: distill
  • sleep and proposals (need a signed-in host agent CLI)
  • setup into real host apps
  • the vector plugin
  • cron and the benchmark numbers (the experiment records the README cites are not in the repo).

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Partial, 3/5: core memory and MCP tools work with no account and clear CLI errors, but recall ignores non-ASCII text, MCP errors aren't tool results, and the automatic memory features need a host agent app. Quality 3 from the independent lab check, which confirmed the original run.
