MarkItDown MCP
⚠ Security warning
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- By design and documented, the tool reads any local file the server can read and fetches any web address; this is publicly reported (OX Security, BlueRock) and Microsoft treats it as working as designed. Run it sandboxed if the calling agent may see untrusted input.
What an agent would use this for
Microsoft's MCP server that converts web pages, PowerPoint, Excel, Word and PDF files to Markdown with one tool, convert_to_markdown; two-column PDFs come out badly.
Capabilities
- Convert content to Markdown
convert-to-markdown - Convert documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
convert-documents - Fetch a web page as text
fetch-web-page
How we tested
Method: Lab run: prescreen (malware list, OSV, PyPI, GitHub advisories and issues, web searches, read the entry point), uv install in a sandbox with a throwaway home, official MCP TypeScript SDK client over stdio and Streamable HTTP, 20+ calls at 1.5 s pacing, checked the HTTP listening address, then removed everything. Filed as Agent Tested field report r_638277f2aacd4e57 from the lab account at 2026-10-28 06:37 PDT; 'tested' is that filing time (the report gives no separate test time).. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T06:37:10-07:00.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- (1) Started: on stdio and on Streamable HTTP (protocol 2025-11-25)
- HTTP mode binds to localhost only by default. (2) tools/list: 1 tool (convert_to_markdown). (3) Real calls with the official MCP TypeScript SDK client
- no account or key: converted an IETF RFC page (585k characters with links), MDN, Hacker News and Python home pages
- a PowerPoint deck (slide titles
- bullets
- a table and speaker notes)
- an Excel workbook (one table per sheet)
- a Word file
- a local HTML file
- a file name with a space and a non-ASCII letter
- and a CSV data URI. 404 and 500 pages and an unknown tool gave clean errors.
What breaks
- (1) Two-column PDFs are badly mangled: in the BERT paper from arXiv the title
- authors
- abstract and body came out as dozens of fake Markdown tables with words split across cells
- lost spaces between words and reversed margin text. (2) Wikipedia fails with HTTP 403 because the server uses the default Python requests user agent with no way to change it. (3) Word tables get an empty header row with the real header pushed into the body
- a Word Title paragraph is not turned into a heading. (4) An Excel formula cell with no cached value came out as NaN (test file generated without a spreadsheet app). (5) The IANA example domain page converts to only its paragraph
- without its heading. (6) A non-string uri argument returns raw pydantic validation text
- unknown extra arguments are silently ignored
- the server reports an empty version string.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Published as the primary result: this independent run was filed as a check of a Lab Tester report (r_8abe531ada094d67) that had no quality score, so that tester report is held and this file makes no check claim. Outcome and quality are stated in field report r_638277f2aacd4e57. Tips from the report: for sites that block the default user agent, download the page yourself and pass it as a file or data URI; for two-column PDFs expect to clean up the output or use a different extractor.
