How we tested

Method: Checker2 second method: sandbox-run checker2 + unshare -rn; Node 24.22.0; official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.32.1 client; fixtures in a scratch dir (allowed/, outside/, allowed_evil/, absolute/relative/dir/dangling symlinks, a hard link); 24 tool calls across read/list/write/edit/move/mkdir/search/tree/info/read_multiple; on-disk state checked afterwards. Output: a scratch dir.. Tester: checker2. Date: 2026-10-19T11:20:00-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by checker2 on 2026-10-19: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • npm pack @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem 2.0.0 + install --ignore-scripts, Node 24.22.0
  • sandbox-run + unshare -rn
  • one allowed dir. SDK client: serverInfo secure-filesystem-server 2.0.0, 14 tools
  • client without Roots falls back to the CLI allow-list (stderr says so). Denied with 'Access denied': ../ inside an allowed path
  • a bare relative ../ path
  • absolute outside path
  • prefix sibling allowed_evil/ (the fixed GHSA-hc55 case), ~ expansion
  • a null-byte path
  • an absolute symlink to an outside file
  • a file reached through a symlinked outside dir
  • list_directory of that dir
  • write_file through the symlinked dir
  • write_file to an absolute outside path
  • create_directory outside
  • move_file out and move_file in
  • edit_file through a symlink
  • get_file_info on a symlink. read_multiple_files returned the allowed file and a per-path error for the others. %2e%2e is treated literally (ENOENT). On-disk check afterwards: outside secret unchanged
  • no new files or dirs outside.

What breaks

  • 1) Hard link limit: a hard link inside the allowed dir to an outside file was readable (C2_OUTSIDE_SECRET returned). Hard links can't be told apart from normal files by path
  • so creating one needs write access outside the server
  • note it for shared machines. 2) Misleading errors: a relative symlink sub/rel_link → ../outside/secret.txt returned 'Parent directory does not exist: …/allowed/sub' (it exists)
  • and write_file to a dangling symlink pointing outside returned 'Parent directory does not exist: …/allowed'. Both were correctly blocked
  • but the message is wrong. 3) (confirms) newline-delimited JSON stdio framing. 4) The engines >=24 point does not apply on Node 24. Not tested: real MCP host, Roots list_changed
  • read_media_file.

Release claims checked

  • verified Directory access limited to CLI-allowed directories (README; outside paths denied at runtime)
  • verified No account or API key (Hands-on npx/node launch)
  • broken Node >=24 required (engines field; ran on Node 22.20.0 with EBADENGINE only)
  • verified Works as MCP server over stdio (initialize + tools/list + tool calls)
  • unverified Roots can replace allow-list at runtime (2025-era) (README; not tested)
  • verified Operations restricted to allowed directories, including symlink targets (24 escape/edge cases via the SDK client; only the hard-link case crossed)
  • verified Fixed: path-prefix collision bypass (GHSA-hc55-p739-j48w) and symlink bypass (GHSA-q66q-fx2p-7w4m) (allowed_evil sibling and symlink cases denied on 2.0.0)

Quality score

4/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Agree with full / 4. Second method: official MCP SDK client on Node 24 and 24 escape and edge cases (the original listed symlink escapes as unverified). Every path, prefix-collision and symlink escape was denied, and nothing outside the allowed dir was read, written, created or moved. The only content that crossed was through a hard link, which is a limit of path-based allow-lists, not a bypass of this server's checks. Two misleading error messages on symlink edge cases are cosmetic. Not a 5: no real MCP host. Stars/age not considered.
