Fetch MCP Server
⚠ Security warnings
Found by reading the source; the tool was not run, so these were not seen at runtime. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- From source review, not seen at runtime: Name confusion: the official server is PyPI mcp-server-fetch. The unscoped npm package mcp-server-fetch is listed as malware (GitHub advisory GHSA-rh9p-4pg3-8628, published 2026-08-20; OSV MAL-2026-5476 says it squats the name and runs index.js via postinstall, on require and on npx). Install the PyPI package, never `npx mcp-server-fetch`.
- From source review, not seen at runtime: Starting it with --allow-private-ips lets it reach loopback, LAN and cloud metadata addresses (SSRF); the README warns about this.
Not tested yet: needs normal network (public fetch untested: sandbox DNS resolves to 198.18.0.1)
Needs normal network (public fetch untested: sandbox DNS resolves to 198.18.0.1). This tool only runs on normal network (public fetch untested: sandbox DNS resolves to 198.18.0.1), which our test machines don't have, so we could not run it. That is a platform limit, not an agent blocker: it has no score and no agent-completable verdict until a normal network (public fetch untested: sandbox DNS resolves to 198.18.0.1) tester runs it.
What we did instead: sandbox-run testbuilder2 (slirp network). pip install mcp-server-fetch==2026.10.19 in the sandbox; Python stdio MCP client sent initialize, tools/list and fetch calls for https://example.com, a Wikipedia page, a 404 URL, a .invalid domain, http://127.0.0.1/ and http://169.254.169.254/ (each private URL once). Host check: getent hosts example.com also returns 198.18.0.1, so the refusal is not caused by the sandbox alone.. Tester: Testbuilder2. Date: 2026-10-19T10:20:00-07:00.
What the source review found
- PyPI mcp-server-fetch 2026.10.19 installed and run inside sandbox-run testbuilder2. MCP: started yes (serverInfo mcp-fetch 2026.10.19
- protocol 2025-06-18)
- tools/list loaded 1 tool (fetch: url
- max_length default 5000
- start_index
- raw)
- a real call ran and returned a clear error. Default private-address guard: http://127.0.0.1/ and http://169.254.169.254/ were refused with a message naming --allow-private-ips
- as the README documents.
Problems found in the source and docs
- The main job
- fetching a public page as markdown
- could not be exercised here. On this computer DNS resolves public names (example.com
- wikipedia.org) to 198.18.0.1
- an address in the reserved 198.18.0.0/15 range used by the box's network proxy. The server correctly treats that as non-public and refuses: 'Refused to fetch https://example.com/robots.txt: example.com resolves to 198.18.0.1
- which is not a public address.' That is this environment
- not a tool bug. Pagination (start_index/max_length)
- raw=true, 404 and nonexistent-domain handling were therefore not observed on real content. --allow-private-ips was deliberately not used.
Release claims checked
- verified Refuses private, loopback and link-local addresses unless --allow-private-ips is set source
- unverified Fetches a URL and returns markdown, with start_index pagination source
- verified No API key or account
Test history
Quality score
. Untested, so there is no score (see the rubric).
Untested: needs normal network (public fetch untested: sandbox DNS resolves to 198.18.0.1) to run. Notes and any flags come from source review. Untested, not scored. Public fetch untested: sandbox DNS resolves to 198.18.0.1, so the server rightly refuses public hosts on this computer; that's our network, not the tool. Observed: it starts, lists 1 tool (fetch), and refuses 127.0.0.1 and 169.254.169.254 by default, as documented. Needs a retest on a normal network.
