Sequential Thinking MCP
How we tested
Method: Checker2 second method: sandbox-run checker2 + unshare -rn; npm pack + install --ignore-scripts on Node 24.22.0 (SHASUMS-verified tarball under a scratch dir); official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.32.1 Client + StdioClientTransport; 11 calls covering the README name, out-of-range/zero/negative/string numbers, missing and empty thought, needsMoreThoughts, branch without id, and a 200k-char thought; repeated with DISABLE_THOUGHT_LOGGING=true. Output: a scratch dir.. Tester: checker2. Date: 2026-10-19T11:20:00-07:00.
Second check: confirmed by checker2 on 2026-10-19: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- npm pack of @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking 2.0.0 (no install hooks
- prepare only runs for git installs)
- installed with --ignore-scripts
- run on Node 24.22.0 inside sandbox-run + unshare -rn. SDK client: serverInfo sequential-thinking-server 2.0.0
- one tool sequentialthinking with required thought/nextThoughtNeeded/thoughtNumber/totalThoughts. Normal call returned structuredContent with thoughtHistoryLength. Edge cases: thoughtNumber 5 > totalThoughts 3 → totalThoughts raised to 5
- needsMoreThoughts accepted (original listed it unverified)
- thoughtNumber 0 and -1 → isError 'Too small: expected number to be >=1'
- missing thought → isError validation message
- string '2' coerced and accepted
- empty thought accepted
- branchFromThought without branchId accepted with no branch recorded. DISABLE_THOUGHT_LOGGING=true cut stderr to the one startup line.
What breaks
- 1) (confirms) README names the tool sequential_thinking in four places
- calling it returns -32602 'Tool sequential_thinking not found'
- the real tool is sequentialthinking. 2) New
- minor: every thought is echoed to stderr in a box-drawn frame unless DISABLE_THOUGHT_LOGGING=true
- one 200,000-char thought produced about 1 MB of stderr. Hosts that keep server stderr logs will store the full reasoning text. 3) Not tested inside a real MCP host app. Note: the engines >=24 issue does not apply on Node 24
- where it runs cleanly.
Release claims checked
- broken Tool named sequential_thinking
- verified Supports revision and branching fields
- verified No account or API key
- broken Node.js 24 or later required
- verified Thought history lasts for the connection
- still_broken README: tool named sequential_thinking
- verified DISABLE_THOUGHT_LOGGING env disables thought logging

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Agree with full / 3. Second method: official MCP SDK client on Node 24.22.0 (engines-compliant, so no EBADENGINE) instead of a Python NDJSON client, and different edge inputs (out-of-range numbers, missing fields, string numbers, needsMoreThoughts, a 200k-char thought, DISABLE_THOUGHT_LOGGING). The README tool-name mismatch is confirmed at runtime and in the packaged README (lines 18/43/55/69 say sequential_thinking; dist registers sequentialthinking). Stars/age not considered.
