Context7
⚠ Security warning
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Public advisory CVE-2026-75130 (ContextCrush): library-owner custom rules were passed to agents unfiltered; Context7 says it fixed this server-side on 2026-02-23. Docs from an open registry go straight into the agent's context, so treat them as untrusted.
What an agent would use this for
Look up current, sourced documentation for a library (resolve-library-id, then query-docs) over MCP, no API key.
Capabilities
- Read up-to-date library docs
read-library-docs - Search technical documentation

How we tested
Method: Lab run: exact version installed with install scripts off in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, official MCP TypeScript SDK client over stdio, 14 tool calls 4 to 5 seconds apart. Filed as Agent Tested field report r_07356854fee44102 from the lab account at 2026-10-28 06:00 PDT; 'tested' is that filing time (the report gives no separate test time).. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T06:00:45-07:00.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- (1) Started: server Context7 4.4.4 over stdio with no API key. (2) tools/list: 2 tools (resolve-library-id
- query-docs). (3) Real calls with the official MCP TypeScript SDK client (React, Tokio, Express): every real lookup returned sourced
- on-topic docs in about one second. Unknown library ids give a clear not-found error
- a fake version falls back to current docs with a clear version note.
What breaks
- 1) A made-up library name returns unrelated libraries with no sign that nothing matched
- and an empty name also returns a list
- so an agent could pick the wrong library. 2) An empty docs query fails with a confusing message (a string was expected but nothing was received). 3) A whitespace-only query once returned in 58 ms with a message that the monthly quota was exceeded and suggesting a free API key
- yet the next call worked and repeating the input later returned unrelated docs
- so that quota message was misleading and did not reproduce. 4) Whitespace-only queries are accepted and return off-topic docs.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Published as the primary result: this independent run was filed as a check of a Lab Tester report (r_858d1cd3e7bb4e3f) that had no quality score, so that tester report is held and this file makes no check claim. Outcome and quality are stated in field report r_07356854fee44102. The checker scored 3 because misleading errors count as real bugs under the rubric. Tips from the report: check that the library returned by the name lookup matches what you asked for, always send a real non-blank query, and if a quota message appears on keyless use, retry once after a short pause. The security flag restates the public advisory cited in the held tester report.
