How we tested

Method: Checker2 second method: sandbox-run checker2; pip download of the wheel + uv venv install; official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.32.1 client on Node 24.22.0 with a scratch HOME; 11 tool calls including story_brief/thread_analysis/expert_brief, invalid and nonexistent ids; `readhn setup --dry-run` with stdin closed and a 15 s cap; read-only review of 0.2.0 source and of GitHub main (setup.py, cli.py, pyproject 0.3.0) via raw.githubusercontent. Output: a scratch dir.. Tester: checker2. Date: 2026-10-19T11:20:00-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by checker2 on 2026-10-19: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • readhn 0.2.0 wheel (no .pth
  • one entry point readhn → hnmcp.server:main) installed with uv in a sandbox venv. SDK client: serverInfo hnmcp 4.1.1, 6 tools. Previously untested tools work: story_brief(50069499) returned the story '11 year old unsoundness bugs found in Rust borrow checker' with top_comments and total_comments
  • thread_analysis returned the thread with max_depth and comment_count
  • expert_brief('simonw') returned trust_score
  • signals and recent_comments. story_brief(0) → ok:false 'Story not found'. find_experts with a Japanese topic returned ok:true. Only public HN Firebase and Algolia URLs are in the source
  • the only file it writes is ~/.hnmcp/trust_cache.json.

What breaks

  • 1) (confirms) `readhn setup --dry-run` on 0.2.0 starts the MCP stdio server (FastMCP banner
  • exits when stdin closes) and changes nothing. The README's setup/--list/--dry-run/--agents exist only in GitHub main (pyproject version 0.3.0
  • hnmcp/setup.py)
  • which is not on PyPI (only 0.2.0 is released). 2) (confirms) keywords do not filter: discover_stories(keywords='zzqxnonexistentkeyword') still returned 5 front-page stories. Source adds keyword_score*0.45 to the ranking and never drops non-matches
  • while the README says 'Top stories filtered by keywords'. 3) (confirms) search hits have empty title and text: search('rust', 168h) and search('') returned rows with title '' and text ''. Source queries Algolia with tags=story but reads story_title/comment_text
  • which are comment fields. 4) New: expert_brief for a nonexistent username returns ok:true with zero scores instead of a not-found error. 5) Large FastMCP ASCII banner on stderr at every start.

Release claims checked

  • broken readhn setup / --dry-run auto-configures agents (README Quick Start; wheel has no setup entry point)
  • verified No API key required (Hands-on; uses public HN APIs)
  • broken discover_stories filters by keywords (README What It Does; keywords=MCP returned non-MCP stories)
  • broken search with explainable ranking (signals present but titles/text empty on story hits)
  • verified find_experts via EigenTrust (Returned expert list; trust_score fields were 0.0 in this run (cache empty))
  • verified 6 tools (tools/list)
  • still_broken readhn setup / --list / --dry-run configure agents (Absent from PyPI 0.2.0; present in GitHub main 0.3.0 (unreleased))
  • still_broken discover_stories: top stories filtered by keywords (Nonsense keyword still returned 5 stories; source only boosts the ranking)

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Agree with partial / 3. Second method: uv install, official MCP SDK client (Node 24), different queries (a nonsense keyword, 'rust', an empty query), the three tools the original did not call, error paths, plus source and GitHub review. All three original defects reproduce, and the source explains each. New context: GitHub main is version 0.3.0 and does contain hnmcp/setup.py + cli.py (the documented `readhn setup`), but PyPI only has 0.2.0, so the README documents an unreleased version. Stars/age not considered.
