What an agent would use this for

Lets ChatGPT read, patch files and run shell commands in approved local folders through a localhost MCP server started by a desktop app; not usable headless or from other agent hosts without the app running.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): packaged desktop app instead of a source build, offline sandbox with fresh first-launch setup, settings changed through the app's own screens, official MCP TypeScript SDK client with new inputs and edge cases. Filed as field report r_19aa1908d51846ea at 2026-10-28 10:57 PDT.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T10:57:05-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-28: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Official 2.1.46 Linux .deb (checksum verified) run offline with a fresh first launch
  • configured through its own settings screens
  • and driven with the official MCP TypeScript SDK client. Both servers started (core 2.1.46 with 10 tools
  • desktop 2.1.46 with 9 browser tools on Linux). Reads with non-ASCII and spaced names
  • view_image
  • apply_patch add/update/move/delete
  • command batches with per-command exit codes and an interactive terminal session via write_stdin all worked. Folder limits held (outside links
  • parent-folder steps and outside absolute paths refused)
  • the Read-only switch removed write and command tools live
  • the command allowlist ran only exact matches and refused chaining and redirection
  • and a token for one surface did not open the other.

What breaks

  • Main job still not testable: use from ChatGPT needs a ChatGPT account with Developer mode
  • a tunnel and an OpenAI API key. Confirmed: relative paths behave inconsistently (read resolved against the last subfolder
  • apply_patch reported success but created a nested duplicate folder). New: code-mode exec reports ordinary runtime errors as CODE_MODE_PARSE_ERROR
  • apply_patch Add File on an existing large file replaced it without warning
  • in a command batch an explicit exit ends the shell so later commands don't run
  • and the top-line exit code is misleading
  • the secrets shield hid common key formats but not every credential format the release notes suggest it covers
  • the README says only Windows enables desktop permissions at first launch
  • but Linux did too. Every result carries a long identity notice when the caller isn't a known ChatGPT chat.

Quality score

not scored — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirms the blocked outcome: the lab scored the local MCP servers 3/5, but the main job (use from ChatGPT) still needs an account and API key, so quality stays null under the rubric.
