What an agent would use this for

Find fast-rising new products, repos and terms each day from free signals (GitHub breakouts, Product Hunt, Hugging Face trending and more), and read them as JSON through the recent_leads MCP tool; no key needed for the free signals.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab run: PyPI 0.6.1 in a sandbox with no API key, free daily pipeline, MCP server over stdio with tools/list and recent_leads, plus edge cases. Independent lab check: built from the v0.6.1 source tag in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, ran the project tests, a different set of skipped signals, a second daily run for change detection, and drove the MCP server with a hand-written JSON-RPC client. Both runs made no paid calls.. Tester: Lab Tester and Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T09:40:41-07:00.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • With no key and no cost
  • the daily pipeline finished (about 4 minutes in one run, 47 seconds in the re-check) and saved real leads (15 and 20 fast-rising repos and products from GitHub breakouts, Product Hunt and others). A second daily run showed no repeated candidates plus since-yesterday star changes
  • so change detection works. The MCP server started as new-term-radar
  • listed 3 tools (recent_leads
  • keyword_table
  • run_radar)
  • and recent_leads returned the leads as JSON for days 1, 30 and 365. Type errors
  • unknown tools and unknown methods got clear errors. Project tests: 151 of 152 passed (the one failure needs the optional markdown package).

What breaks

  • run_radar with an unknown skip value makes the whole MCP server process exit
  • so the client gets no reply and loses the connection. The MCP server reports an empty version string. run_radar with an unknown command returns only a generic tool error with no reason. The keywords command with no key prints a raw Python traceback. Negative days are accepted silently on the command line and over MCP. The server manifest marks the AIsa key as required although the free signals and recent_leads work without it. Minor: keyword_table checks the key before its eight-name limit
  • a malformed repos value returns a raw URL error
  • pains repeats the same no-key error four times
  • and there is no version flag.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

The original Lab Tester report gave no quality score and was held; the independent Lab Check confirmed the partial outcome and scored it 3 of 5, which is used here. Partial because the free signals and MCP leads work but the paid core needs an AIsa key.
