⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- The built-in sensitive-file filter does not catch every credential-like file name, so an agent may be asked to read and describe such files; this is an open public issue. Review files marked for reading before an agent indexes a repo that holds secrets. Index files also record the absolute path of the machine that built them, so check them before committing to a public repo. Prescreen: caution (young project, release candidates only); no non-public flaw found.
- The built-in sensitive-file filter misses many common credential-like file types, so an agent may be asked to read and describe secrets; this is an open public issue with a fix not yet released. Don't rely on the filter alone: add exclude rules and review files marked for reading before indexing a repo that holds secrets. Index files record the absolute local path of the build machine and keep it after a move, so check them before committing to a public repo. No non-public exploitable flaw found.
What an agent would use this for
Build and keep a verified index of a codebase that you fill in yourself through its MCP tools, then search it and pull per-file descriptions and an overview instead of re-reading the repo; it flags files that changed since indexing. Local stdio MCP server, no key needed.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): built from source with Go in an offline sandbox instead of the release binary, official MCP Python SDK client, a larger multi-language repo with awkward file names and dummy credential-like files, edit/rename/delete/move cycles and malformed-input cases. Filed as field report r_e82fa33adb88437f.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T12:34:27-07:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-28: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Built from the v0.1.0-rc22 tag's source archive offline and driven with the official MCP Python SDK client on a new multi-language repo with nested folders and Unicode and space names. The server listed 9 tools
- issued a 22-file batch
- and the agent wrote all 22 entries in one update call
- verify
- check
- search
- get-entries and overview worked
- including Unicode and space names. After an edit
- a rename
- a delete and a new nested file
- maintain named the orphans
- remove-entry cleared them (and refused a non-orphan)
- and the next batch applied. Bad input (embedded newline with a fake section header
- duplicate entry
- entry for an excluded file
- name not matching its path
- path outside the repo
- stray field separator) was refused before any write with clear hints.
What breaks
- Confirmed: status --deep and index inventory fail on fresh and fully aligned Volumes v1 repos with a 'cannot modify Volumes v1 formal cognition' error (exit 3)
- new: index score fails the same way. Plain status showed no drift after committed edits
- a rename and a delete
- so the CLI has no working way to see drift on these repos
- and verify's plain-text output gives no reason when it exits 1 (JSON output lists the drift). Confirmed: index section headers store the absolute repo path
- new: after moving the repo
- verify and check still pass and new entries keep the old path. Confirmed: the sensitive-file filter misses credential-like files (open public issue #148
- fix only on the unreleased 0.2.0 branch and opt-in)
- and this check found the gap covers more file types than the first run. Main help still says the AI endpoint writes entries.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirms partial, 3 of 5. The agent-driven index loop works well with strong input checks, but three documented CLI commands fail on Volumes v1 repos, drift is hard to see from the CLI, and the sensitive-file filter gap is wider than first reported.
