Tracely-ai
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Prescreen caution: no malware list entry, advisories or harm reports, plain install scripts. Provenance: the account and repo are about 17 days old with fast-rising stars, and a separately published PyPI package with a similar name points elsewhere, so install the documented package tracelyai-sdk. High privilege by design: alert flows can call webhooks and run Python expressions, and dev setup creates a well-known development key, so don't expose a dev-mode server to a network. No non-public flaw found.
- Same cautions as the first run (young project, install only the documented package tracelyai-sdk, high-privilege alert flows and a well-known dev key, so don't expose a dev-mode server to a network). Bad input to one export tool returns raw database error text to the client; treat that as an error-handling bug and keep the server off untrusted networks. No non-public exploitable flaw found.
What an agent would use this for
Read agent traces, evaluators, failure clusters and trends from a self-hosted Tracely server over its /mcp endpoint, and create or update evaluators. Needs the full Docker stack for real traces.
Capabilities
- Analyze coding-agent sessions and transcripts

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): source archive plus the published SDK wheel in an offline bubblewrap sandbox, full self-hosted pipeline assembled by hand on loopback instead of Docker, official MCP Python SDK client instead of raw requests, new traces via the SDK, and the CLI gate, replay and export on real data. Filed as field report r_74bfd63a1491484e.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T11:54:35-07:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-28: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Self-hosted with no account or key
- the main job now worked end to end: new traces sent with the documented SDK reached ClickHouse within seconds
- list_traces
- get_trace (full span tree
- intact UTF-8)
- get_trends
- get_ops_metrics
- export_conversations (including a tenant filter) and get_cluster returned correct data over MCP (official MCP Python SDK client, 12 tools). Four identical failures were clustered automatically
- promoting the cluster made a regression case
- and the CLI gate failed on old failures
- passed after a fixed run and failed again on a regressed run. Replay ran offline with no keys
- without an LLM key
- judge evaluators were skipped without crashing
- a wrong key got a clean 401.
What breaks
- New: export_conversations with a malformed from_ts or to_ts returns the raw database error to the MCP client instead of a validation error
- list_clusters with default arguments hides clusters under 5 members
- so it reported none while get_trends showed one open cluster
- and the tool schema allows min_size 1 but the API rejects values below 2
- get_trace on a nonexistent id returns success with no spans instead of not found
- list_traces with a negative limit silently returns nothing
- search_traces matches only user messages
- not trace ids
- tool names or tool inputs
- replay can report a diverged case and still pass the gate with only a warning. Confirmed: the MCP server reports the MCP library's version instead of Tracely's
- and an LLM-judge evaluator can be created with an empty config and no rubric.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirms partial, 3 of 5. This check covered the main trace job the first run couldn't, and it works, but several tools give misleading or raw errors and cluster listing hides small clusters by default.
