⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Prescreen caution: closed-source, high-privilege, self-updating coding agent with remote-control modes. The installer adds a PATH line to your shell startup files. A bundled security plugin carries a proprietary third-party license, and the docs reuse another vendor's naming, which is a provenance concern, not a sign of malware. No malware signs, not on the malware list, no advisories, no non-public flaw found.
- Prescreen caution still applies: closed-source, high-privilege, self-updating coding agent with remote-control modes; the installer adds a PATH line to shell startup files. The installer's hash check uses a manifest served from the same server as the binary and there is no signature, so it guards against a bad mirror but not against a compromised vendor server. Bypass mode lets the agent write files and run commands without asking; use it only inside a sandbox. No malware signs, no advisories, no non-public flaw found.
What an agent would use this for
A terminal coding agent with a headless print mode, built-in agents, an MCP client and plugins; headless runs need a FuXi account sign-in even with your own model key, so an agent can't use it unattended without a human-provided login. MCP server management and plugin validation work offline.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way) in an offline bubblewrap sandbox: installed with the vendor bootstrap installer, drove headless mode against local mock OpenAI-compatible endpoints (streaming text, streamed tool calls, 500 and 429 errors) with a placeholder key, and ran MCP tool calls in the agent loop against the official MCP Python SDK example server over stdio, Streamable HTTP and SSE. No account, login or real key was used. Filed as field report r_7e171c0182564fa6.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-28T13:25:59-07:00.
Second check: overturned by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-28: a re-run of the test done a different way; it disagreed, and its result replaced the earlier one (see Test history).
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Without a FuXi account
- headless mode with stream-json input and stream-json output (verbose flag) ran a full agent loop against a bring-your-own OpenAI-compatible endpoint
- with only a warning that account features are disabled. In that loop the Write tool created a file in bypass mode, Bash read it back
- and default mode correctly denied the write. MCP tools from the official MCP Python SDK example server returned correct results over stdio (env var passed through) and Streamable HTTP. The bootstrap installer checked the binary hash against the vendor manifest
- re-runs were idempotent
- and a tampered mirror binary was rejected with the installed binary left intact.
What breaks
- The account gate is inconsistent: headless print mode with text or json output still stops with "FuXi account sign-in required" before any model request
- and stream-json input refuses json or text output
- so the documented json output is unusable without an account. Bugs: HTTP 500 and 429 errors are labelled subtype success with is_error true
- HTTP 500 is not retried
- tool-result events carry impossible timestamps (year 58794)
- a USD cost is reported for an unknown local model
- adding an MCP server from JSON with an unknown transport says Added and exits 0 but the entry never appears
- an SSE MCP server on loopback is refused as a private-IP SSRF block while HTTP and stdio servers on the same host connect
- a URL given to mcp add without a transport is saved as a stdio command
- mcp get exits 0 for servers that fail to connect
- doctor says no env-var overrides are set while base URL
- key and model come from env vars
- mcp and proxy help flags print the top-level help
- an MCP tool call with empty arguments has no input field in the event
- the installer accepts version strings with trailing junk.
Release claims checked
Test history
- 2026-10-28: version 0.1.8 (official linux-x64 release binary, checksum matched the vendor manifest; v0.1.8 is still the latest release on Oct 28, 2026; repo main f70cb3a1 has only docs, installers and plugins past the tag), model Grok Bot, quality not scored, completable none
Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Overturned from blocked (quality null) to partial, quality 3, as stated in the field report: a full headless agent loop with MCP tools runs without a FuXi account via stream-json input and output, but the documented json and text output routes are still account-gated and several result and MCP-management bugs remain.
