What an agent would use this for

Evaluate a .NET AI agent: run YAML dataset evals from the CLI with JSON output and meaningful exit codes, assert which tools it called and with what arguments from C#, catch regressions against a saved golden run, and gate tool calls with a policy check.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): fresh sandbox with a throwaway home folder, network only to install the .NET SDK and the CLI from NuGet, then all runs offline against a self-written fake OpenAI-compatible server with correct, wrong, 50% wrong, empty, HTTP 429, broken JSON and never-answering modes. Covered new CSV/JSONL datasets, stochastic multi-run scoring, JUnit export, sealed evidence output and verify, run comparison, and capture-to-fixture conversion. Filed as field report r_caadcbbba65744ce.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-29T12:27:16-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-29: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked the AgentEval.Cli 1.0.0-rc.1 dotnet tool (.NET SDK 10.0.403) a different way: new CSV and JSONL datasets
  • offline against a local fake OpenAI-compatible server. The CSV dataset reported 2 of 3 passing with the failing case shown against the 70 threshold (exit 1)
  • the JSONL dataset passed 2 of 2 (exit 0). An empty reply scored a measured 0. HTTP 429 with retry-after was retried 4 times per case and then reported as not measured (null score
  • exit 11)
  • and a 200 response with broken JSON was also not measured (exit 11)
  • never a fake pass. Stochastic mode with 3 runs per case against a half-wrong server gave per-case pass rates and score spread and failed cases below the 80% bar
  • 2 or 0 runs were refused with clear errors (exit 2). JUnit export was well formed
  • sealed evidence runs passed integrity verify
  • and capture-to-fixture conversion produced a 3-turn fixture without leaking the dummy API key.

What breaks

  • Reproduced from the first run: the init starter dataset's greeting case expects the literal text 'A friendly greeting response'
  • so a normal greeting scores 0 and the starter run exits 1. New: the compare command refused every pair of fresh sealed evidence runs from this same version (exit 13, 'neither run recorded any comparability facts')
  • even a run compared with itself and with temperature
  • max tokens
  • system prompt and subject version pinned
  • although the docs say that refusal is for runs written before those facts existed
  • so the documented evaluate-then-compare workflow does not work from the CLI. New: when the endpoint accepts the connection but never answers
  • there is no progress output and no request timeout option
  • each request waited about 100 seconds before retrying and a 2-case run was still going after 5 minutes. Minor: the fixture conversion command needs the long-form out option and rejects the short output option the eval command uses.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirmed partial 3/5 as stated in the field report: core evaluation and not-measured handling work well, but the starter dataset bug reproduced, compare refuses fresh runs, and a hanging endpoint stalls runs with no timeout option.
