What an agent would use this for

Run a computer-use agent loop from Python: headless web use (read a page outline, type, click, return a result dict) and shell use (run commands and edit files in a workspace folder), with desktop and phone modes, using an OpenAI-compatible model you supply.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): the PyPI source release built with maturin on Python 3.13 instead of the prebuilt wheel, the Anthropic provider route instead of OpenAI, a scripted stand-in for the provider behind a local proxy, headless system Chrome with a fresh profile, in a bubblewrap sandbox with the network cut; new scenarios (form page, tabs, page scripts, dropdown and checkbox, parallel web tasks, shell file edits). Filed as field report r_a5e99dd77760449a.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-29T09:27:11-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-29: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Built from the PyPI source release and driven through the Anthropic provider route against a local stand-in model. Headless web use finished a 10-step task (typed into a text box
  • scrolled
  • submitted a form
  • opened and switched tabs
  • cleanly refused 'forward' with no history) and returned a success dict. Keyboard down
  • down
  • enter picked a dropdown option
  • a checkbox click took
  • a page script reading cookies was refused
  • scrolling at the end reported no effect to the model
  • scrape-mode misuse was refused and the run stopped after 3 bad turns with status incomplete. Two parallel web tasks returned '2/2 tasks succeeded'. Shell write
  • replace
  • grep and glob worked
  • and a wrong replace failed with a clear mismatch message. With Chrome hidden it raised 'no browser found: install Google Chrome to use web mode'. With the network cut except the stand-in, AutoCua only contacted the model API.

What breaks

  • Confirmed from the first run: shell use returns the bare string 'Exit' instead of the response dict its docstring promises (also on the Anthropic route)
  • and the agent's own next-goal text shows up inside the page outline on every next step. New: typing into a native dropdown fails with 'the field did not take focus
  • nothing typed: focus is on select'
  • and clicking the dropdown marks it expanded but its options never appear in the page outline
  • although the click tool docs say they will. The shell agent's file tools are not limited to the per-run workspace folder (see security). Building the source release needs Rust 1.88 or newer
  • older Rust fails on a dependency. Linux shell use still needs system introspection packages pip can't install.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirms partial 3/5: web use is solid with clear errors and parallel tasks work, but shell use drops its result, native dropdowns need a keyboard workaround, and shell file tools aren't confined to the workspace.
