tau2-bench
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Prescreen clean (no published security advisories on the repo). Agent-safety caution: real runs send full task conversations to whichever LLM provider is configured and spend that provider's credits; the default models are paid OpenAI models, so set a budget cap and use the dry run first. Name confusion: the PyPI package named tau2 is an unrelated project (a magnetic relaxation library), and tau2-bench isn't on PyPI, so 'pip install tau2' installs the wrong software; install from the GitHub repo as the README says. No non-public flaw found.
- No new security finding. Benchmark-integrity caution: the gym reset info contains the evaluation criteria and the simulated user's hidden instructions, so harnesses must keep it away from the agent under test. Earlier cautions stand: real runs spend the configured provider's credits, and the PyPI name tau2 belongs to an unrelated project. No non-public flaw found.
What an agent would use this for
Benchmark a tool-using conversational agent: run it against a simulated user on built-in task domains and get per-task rewards (database state, required actions, communication) plus full transcripts in results.json; works offline against any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): pip install on Python 3.12 instead of uv sync, the Gymnasium Python interface with the checker's own code playing the agent step by step instead of the tau2 run command, the airline domain instead of mock, and a new local fake chat-completions server for the simulated user, offline in a sandbox with a fake placeholder key; also the user-side gym, gym edge cases, the gym test folder, and the command-line findings re-checked on the retail domain. Filed as field report r_326f4e69d93f4e7f.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-29T11:19:38-07:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-29: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Installed v2.0.0 with pip (gym extra) on Python 3.12 instead of uv
- and drove the documented Gymnasium Python interface instead of the tau2 run command
- on the airline domain instead of mock
- fully offline with a local fake model playing only the simulated user. On airline task 40 (change a passenger name) a correct agent scored reward 1.0 with database match and both expected actions matched
- and a wrong date of birth scored 0.0
- so scoring works on a second domain. Tool calls in function and JSON form work
- unknown tools and bad ids come back as readable tool errors
- an empty action is rejected
- an unknown task id in the gym gives a clean error
- the user-side gym ran to its stop token
- and the gym tests passed offline (28 passed, 7 skipped).
What breaks
- Reproduced from the first run: every import fails on Python 3.13 (missing audioop)
- the benchmark-mode JSON dry run prints two text lines before the JSON
- an unknown task id on the command line ends in a raw traceback
- and an all-infrastructure-failed run prints success
- shows average reward 0.0000 and exits 0
- still no version flag. New in the gym interface: reset returns the full task in its info
- including the expected tool calls with arguments and the simulated user's hidden instructions
- which the gym readme doesn't mention
- so a harness that passes info to the agent leaks the answer key. A malformed tool call (for example a missing closing parenthesis) is not rejected and is sent to the simulated customer as a chat message. When the user-simulator model fails
- reset returns an empty observation without raising and the next step returns reward 0.0 and terminated
- so an infrastructure failure looks like an agent scoring zero. Any step after the episode ends returns reward 0.0 and drops the reward details
- even after a 1.0 episode. Minor: a number passed as an id gives a Python internals error
- the gym logs every message at INFO by default
- and it logs an error for model names missing from the LiteLLM price list.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirms partial 3/5: scoring works on a second domain through a second interface, but the first run's bugs reproduce and the gym adds silent infrastructure-failure zeros and an undocumented answer-key leak in reset info.
