What an agent would use this for

A versioned file store for agents: fork branches, edit files, diff, merge with rule-based conflict resolution and publish, all from a CLI with JSON output and typed error codes, so parallel agents can work on separate branches safely.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): the release tag source instead of main, the JavaScript SDK called directly from new Node scripts instead of the CLI, in a no-network bubblewrap sandbox; init unprivileged and as mapped root; new inputs (unicode, deep, binary, large and CRLF files, 8-deep fork chain, 30 MB bodies, five kinds of merge conflict, parallel writes and publishes from stale branches). Filed as field report r_fefbcc4a70f54362.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-29T09:07:37-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-29: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • About 150 JavaScript SDK calls from new Node scripts against a local Store. Unicode
  • deep
  • binary and large files round-tripped
  • an 8-deep fork chain behaved correctly
  • typed-array, DataView and 30 MB writes worked with typed
  • clear refusals. An apply that failed at step 3 committed nothing and named the failing index. Merge correctly reported binary
  • modify/delete
  • add/add and line conflicts
  • and a .lww rule cleared only its file. 20 parallel writes to different paths all landed
  • 10 parallel writes to one path gave 1 commit and 9 Conflict errors. Diff paging with a cursor worked.

What breaks

  • Confirmed from the first run: init as a normal user fails with an undocumented 'must run as user 0' error and leaves the project entry behind so a retry says Exists
  • opening an unknown project returns Failed with a raw OS error instead of NoSuchProject
  • invalid project names (uppercase
  • or 64 characters) are reported as 'a project name is required'
  • init on a missing source folder returns a raw internal debug dump with local paths
  • writing into a missing folder (and removing or editing a missing file) returns Content(PathNotFound) with no path named. New: init with a relative folder path gives the same raw debug dump
  • writing under a path that is an existing file returns code Unknown (mkdir there correctly returns NotDirectory)
  • publishing with a commit id from another branch returns HeadMoved with a raw debug structure
  • a line conflict in a 4.7 MB plain-text CSV is reported as kind 'binary' with no hunks
  • publish replaces main's whole view
  • so a branch forked before someone else's publish silently drops that publish's files from main (only shown in the response's overwrote list
  • the bundled skill documents it
  • the SDK guide and README don't)
  • an invalid glob pattern returns an empty result instead of an error.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirms partial 3/5: the Store, branch and merge core is solid for agents, but several errors are raw or misleading, init's root requirement is undocumented, and publish can silently drop another branch's published files unless you merge main first.
