How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): pip install of the PyPI package on Python 3.13 instead of the git tag, the native Anthropic Messages route instead of the OpenAI-compatible one, a local fake Messages server with a dummy key, offline in a sandbox; tried a good model, a prose-only model, all-500, all-529, an intermittent mid-scenario 500, a wire-format mismatch, three trials, the history command and the Python API. Filed as field report r_8a2d4b4e4fdf4730.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-29T11:30:22-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-29: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked 3.0.0 from the published PyPI package on Python 3.13 using the native Anthropic Messages route instead of the OpenAI-compatible one
  • against a local fake Messages server with a dummy key. The route sends the right version header
  • streams by default
  • parses streamed tool-use blocks
  • and scores TC-01 pass 100 for a correct weather call and fail 0 for a prose-only reply. HTTP 529 overload replies are retried with backoff
  • the preflight stops cleanly when a listed model returns 500 or 529
  • the Python run_benchmark function with scenario objects and the Anthropic wire format returns the versioned result (final score 100)
  • and trials and the history table work.

What breaks

  • Reproduced from the first run on the Anthropic route: with the preflight off
  • an all-HTTP-500 run tags the scenario server_error and lists it as excluded with completion rate 0.0 but still reports final score 0
  • rating Poor and exit code 0
  • although the methodology doc says infrastructure failures are dropped rather than counted as zero
  • persistent 529 overload after retries does the same. A listed model failing the preflight exits with code 3 (model_not_available) while the CLI reference lists code 3 only for no models found
  • and error summaries mask the host of an unrelated documentation link. New: a single transient 500 on the second turn of a scenario is not retried and wipes out that scenario
  • and an HTTP 200 reply in the wrong wire format (an Anthropic-shaped body on the OpenAI chat route
  • which happens when the format is left on auto for a local address) is graded as the model failing (missing_step
  • score 0
  • exit 0) instead of being reported as a mismatched response.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirms partial 3/5: tool-call grading works on a second wire format, but infrastructure failures still score 0 with exit 0, and wrong-format replies and transient mid-scenario errors are graded as model failures.
