What an agent would use this for

Give an agent long-term memory as plain Markdown files: create, search, show, update and link memories over a stdio MCP server or the command line, with validation and a change log.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): Go source build of the release tag instead of the release binary, the official MCP Python SDK client instead of raw JSON-RPC, new inputs on a fresh memory folder, in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home and networking off. Filed as field report r_799c3506f15149ee.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-29T09:59:09-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-29: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Built v0.7.2 from the tag's source with Go instead of using the release binary
  • and drove the stdio MCP server with the official MCP Python SDK client instead of a raw JSON-RPC script
  • on a fresh memory folder with new inputs. The server listed 6 tools
  • and create
  • search
  • show (including the okf://project/ form)
  • update (status and tags)
  • relate and validate all worked. A 300,000-character body was stored and found. Missing or self link targets
  • absolute IDs and titles with newlines got clear errors
  • and everything survived a server restart.

What breaks

  • Reproduced from the first run: creating a memory with an ID that already exists silently replaces it and reports success
  • and the change log just shows a second creation. New: a blank or whitespace-only search returns results with matched_on set to null
  • which breaks the tool's own output schema
  • so the official MCP Python SDK client raises an invalid structured content error and the agent gets no results at all. An ID containing a space is accepted
  • but the link written into the parent index is not valid Markdown
  • so the tool's own validator then reports the memory as missing from its index and strict validation fails. IDs are case-sensitive
  • so two memories differing only in case become separate files that could collide on case-insensitive disks (default macOS or Windows
  • not tested there). Showing a user-scope memory before any user memory folder exists gives a raw 'bundle directory does not exist' error.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirms partial 3/5: core memory over MCP works and persists, but silent overwrite reproduces, and blank searches now break SDK-based clients outright, plus ID handling bugs.
