What an agent would use this for

Obfuscate a JavaScript bundle, Python script or other build output before release so AI agents find it harder to reverse-engineer, from the command line or over MCP; you must run the protected output yourself to confirm it still works.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): new sample programs, direct runtime comparison and different MCP tools, in a no-network bubblewrap sandbox. Filed as field report r_69af417d37614a0a.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-30T11:07:25-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-30: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked a different way on npm 1.1.0 in a no-network sandbox with new throwaway programs (ES modules with async and classes, CommonJS closures with private fields
  • async Python
  • a separate class sample)
  • comparing runtime output directly and using different MCP tools (verify
  • emit-headers
  • doctor
  • defend). The 1.1.0 protected outputs matched the original runtime behaviour
  • MCP doctor
  • emit-headers
  • verify with the correct argument and defend worked
  • and defended output still ran. On GitHub 1.5.1, Python protection still matched. npm latest is still 1.1.0.

What breaks

  • All original findings reproduced: on GitHub 1.5.1
  • protecting a class-only JavaScript file renames the class and its export inconsistently so Node throws ReferenceError
  • while verify still reports success
  • on 1.1.0
  • verify only scores static obfuscation (a hand-edited protected file whose output changed still scored 99/100)
  • an unknown intensity value is accepted silently
  • malformed Python is 'protected' with exit 0
  • doctor reports Claude Code on an empty home. New: the MCP verify tool
  • called with empty or wrong argument names
  • silently verifies the current working directory instead of erroring (same pattern as the audit tool).

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirmed partial 3/5: all first-run bugs reproduced on new samples, plus one related MCP argument fallback issue.
