What an agent would use this for

Run a tool-using agent harness against any OpenAI-compatible model with file, code and multi-read tools, workspace confinement and turn caps, as a base for co-training a model and its harness on verifiable long-horizon tasks.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): non-editable install with uv in a no-network sandbox with a throwaway home, harness API driven by an in-process scripted model with new scenarios. Filed as field report r_9a4a1db04c9d4ec3.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-30T10:49:09-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-30: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked a different way: non-editable runtime-only install on Python 3.13
  • driving the harness Python API with an in-process scripted model
  • offline in a sandbox
  • with new scenarios. A 4-turn episode with write
  • read
  • list
  • search and code execution worked
  • read_file refused a symlink escape
  • non-zero exit codes were reported
  • the output cap truncated and flagged output
  • max_turns stopped an endless loop.

What breaks

  • Reproduced: a normal Linux venv is rejected because its python is a symlink (a venv made with the copies option works)
  • failed tools reach the model only as 'tool_execution_failed' with no reason. New: tool arguments that are valid JSON but break the tool's schema (wrong type
  • missing field) end the whole episode instead of being reported to the model
  • when the harness-level tool timeout fires
  • a command started by the code-execution tool keeps running after the model is told it timed out (the tool's own timeout argument does stop it)
  • the file-search tool does not apply the workspace limit that the read and list tools use.

Quality score

2/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirmed partial 2/5: original findings reproduced, plus three new harness issues (schema-invalid arguments end the run, harness timeout leaves the process running, file search ignores the workspace limit).
