⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Prescreen clean: not on the Agent Tested malware list and no OSV records for serena-agent 2.1.0. Neutral notes: the default REPL mode runs Python inside the server, so the file tools' project limits don't bound what that Python can read (documented; use the tools interface if that matters); the shell tool can run in a folder outside the project; repository text, including planted instructions, is returned to the model verbatim; a local dashboard listens on the local machine without a login for local requests; usage statistics are sent by default.
- Neutral caution (new): in Serena 2.1.0 the memory tools did not enforce the same outside-the-project limits as the file tools when working in an untrusted repository, so a repository's own Serena memory folder can lead memory reads and writes to files outside the project. Until upstream addresses it, review an untrusted repository's Serena memory folder before using memory tools, or don't use them on untrusted repositories. Earlier neutral notes still apply (REPL Python isn't bound by the file tools' limits, documented; the shell tool accepts an outside working folder). No other new finding.
What an agent would use this for
Coding MCP server with semantic code tools: symbol overview and lookup, find references, read files, edit, rename or insert symbols across files, run shell commands and keep project memories; use the tools interface for strict project limits and replace_content for constants.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): official MCP Python SDK client over streamable HTTP and SSE on loopback and stdio for the REPL interface, pyright language server, a new nested-package repo with inheritance, annotated and multi-line constants, class attributes and symlinks, memory across two restarts, in an offline sandbox. Filed as field report r_ae55d6194fb348ed.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-30T12:04:48-07:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-30: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way on serena-agent 2.1.0 from PyPI
- offline in a sandbox: the official MCP Python SDK client over streamable HTTP and SSE on loopback
- plus stdio for the REPL interface
- on a new nested-package Python repo with class inheritance
- annotated and multi-line constants
- class attributes and symlinks
- using the pyright language server. All three transports started (HTTP bound to localhost only)
- with 29 tools in the tools interface and 3 in the default REPL interface. Symbol overview
- find symbol
- cross-package references
- method body replacement
- a class rename across 3 files
- insert before and after a symbol
- diagnostics and the shell tool worked
- and a memory written
- edited and recalled after two restarts returned the updated value. File tools refused parent-folder
- absolute and symlinked paths in the untrusted project.
What breaks
- Confirmed the original bug and found it broader (public issue 2226): replace_symbol_body returns OK but leaves a syntax error when used on annotated module constants
- multi-line dict constants and class attributes in base and subclasses
- through both interfaces
- find symbol reports a constant's body as just its name. New: rename_symbol on a base-class method renamed the base method and its call site but not the subclass override
- reported success and left diagnostics clean while program output silently changed. New: in an untrusted project the memory tools did not apply the same outside-project limits as the file tools (see security note). Reproduced: REPL errors are not flagged as errors, REPL Python can read outside the project (documented)
- and the shell tool accepts an outside working folder. find_implementations errors under pyright (related public issues 2019 and 2023)
- and an unknown REPL session id silently starts a new session.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: the constant-corruption bug reproduces more widely, and a rename that misses subclass overrides also reports success, so edits need verification.
