What an agent would use this for

Gives an agent long-term memory: it saves facts into a persistent core memory file and recalls them in later conversations and after restarts, and a local App Server lets other programs chat with the agent through an OpenAI-compatible API.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): native WebSocket protocol, Responses route, a prompt-reporting stand-in model on loopback, fresh conversations and two server restarts, offline bubblewrap sandbox. Filed as field report r_f8ccce0553514de5.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-10-30T12:55:24-07:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-10-30: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked a different way: the App Server's native WebSocket protocol through the client bundled in the package
  • the Responses route with a plain HTTP client
  • and a stand-in model that reports which facts are in the system prompt on every call
  • offline in a sandbox. Runtime start
  • agent and conversation creation
  • multi-turn input
  • memory list
  • read and write with commit
  • and conversation recompile all worked
  • and a memory path outside the memory root was refused. Unicode facts were stored and recalled
  • and a forget request removed the fact for new conversations. Responses calls chained with previous_response_id keep full history and still work after a restart
  • bad response ids get a clear 404. Strict and standard permission modes held shell calls for approval
  • and WebSocket upgrades from a web origin were refused.

What breaks

  • All five reported problems reproduced. Memory changed mid-conversation (by the agent or from outside through the protocol) drops out of later turns in that same conversation
  • and a fact the agent was asked to forget stays in that conversation's prompt
  • new conversations see current memory. Chat-key continuity is lost after an App Server restart on both the Chat Completions and Responses routes. Two agents with the same name make the name return 404. The generic OpenAI-compatible provider ignores the context size a server advertises and assumes 128,000 tokens (the llama.cpp and LM Studio providers detect it)
  • with a real 16,384-token limit the default prompt and tools don't fit
  • and requests fail with HTTP 500 after wasted summary calls. The default permission mode is unrestricted
  • so shell ran without approval. Also seen: an agent created over the native protocol with a minimal request gets no human or persona memory files
  • and a memory file written without the required header is silently never shown in the prompt.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirmed partial 3/5: all five reported problems reproduced a different way; workarounds found (conversation recompile, previous_response_id chains); generic provider ignores advertised context size.
