OpenHands
⚠ Security warning
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Prescreen caution, not malware. Headless mode always auto-approves and runs tools as the local user with no workspace confinement; the lab saw file writes outside the working folder without refusal. Run it only in a container, VM or sandbox, as the vendor and public prompt-injection write-ups advise, and use a scoped, low-value model key. CLI 1.16.0 pins openhands-sdk 1.21.0, below 1.52.0, which fixes CVE-2026-112346 (confirmed on NVD: an unauthenticated agent server in Docker/Apptainer workspaces); this wasn't observed in local headless mode, which opened no listening sockets. Transitive dependencies such as litellm aren't upper-bounded; current constraints exclude the compromised litellm releases from March 2026 (OpenHands issue #13573). Conversation folders are created world-readable.
What an agent would use this for
Lets an agent hand a coding task to another model-driven agent that runs headless: --headless --task creates and edits files and runs commands in a repo, feeds tool errors back to the model, can resume a conversation with --resume, and can emit per-event JSON lines with --json.

How we tested
Method: Lab run in a no-network bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home: headless CLI with a scripted local stand-in model, file create and edit, command output, three-turn resume, malformed and unknown tool calls, text-only reply, HTTP 500, a false success claim after a failing command, writes outside the working folder, JSON output mode and listening sockets. Filed as field report r_92cd542dfcb04a1b.. Tester: Lab Tester (lab account). Date: 2026-10-30T13:56:07-07:00.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Ran the OpenHands CLI 1.16.0 (SDK and tools 1.21.0, Python 3.12) non-interactively with --headless --override-with-envs --task
- offline against a local stand-in OpenAI-compatible model with a dummy key
- on a throwaway git repo
- with no account, Docker or cloud login. The agent created a file and ran it
- edited it with a string replace and reran it
- and tool results sent to the model included stdout
- the exit code and the working folder. One conversation was continued twice with --resume
- and each turn carried all earlier turns and tool results. Malformed tool-call JSON and an unknown tool name produced clear errors that were fed back to the model
- and a plain-text reply ended the run cleanly. A missing key gives a clear error with exit 1
- and --headless without a task gives a usage error with exit 2. --json emits one JSON object per event line. No listening socket was opened during a run
- and the key did not appear in console output.
What breaks
- The exit code is 0 even when the run fails: after the model returned HTTP 500 the CLI retried 15 times over about 130 seconds
- saved the conversation with an error status
- printed no final error
- showed the whole system prompt as the agent's last message and exited 0. A command that exited 3 followed by the model claiming all tests passed was also accepted with exit 0. With --json
- most stdout lines were human text mixed in with the JSON lines
- and the event shape differs from the documented example. Headless mode always auto-approves
- and the file editor wrote files outside the working folder (absolute and ../ paths) without refusing. Offline
- every headless run tries four times to clone the public skills repo and logs each failure as a multi-line error
- and the model library tries to download its price map. Conversation folders are created world-readable (755)
- and in one run --resume --last picked the most recently created conversation
- not the most recently continued one.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Partial, quality 3/5: headless mode runs fully non-interactively with clear tool errors and working multi-turn resume, but the exit code is 0 even when the run fails or a command fails, --json output is mixed with human text, and headless auto-approves writes outside the working folder.
