DuckDuckGo MCP
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Prescreen clean, not malware. Fetched page text is passed to the model raw, so injected instructions on a page reach the agent verbatim (the tool descriptions say to treat it as untrusted).
- The allow-private-URLs option (or its environment variable) turns off the local-address protection entirely, including loopback and cloud metadata addresses; use it only in an isolated environment.
- Unknown link tokens are echoed unescaped in error text (public issue 76). The optional curl backend imitates a Chrome browser's TLS fingerprint to get past bot filters (documented).
- Re-confirmed: fetched page text reaches the model raw, and both fetch modes also return hidden page text, so instructions hidden in a page can reach the agent; search results can include javascript, file and loopback links, which the agent should not open with other tools.
- fetch_content has no download size limit, so a very large or heavily compressed page can use a lot of memory and time; run the server with a memory limit and avoid fetching untrusted large files.
- Re-confirmed: the allow-private-URLs option turns off the local-address protection, so redirects to loopback and cloud metadata addresses are then followed (documented opt-in); keep it off outside an isolated environment.
How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): the official MCP Python SDK client over stdio, streamable HTTP and SSE in a bubblewrap sandbox, paced live searches on two search backends, a multi-turn search and fetch session, and an offline fake network with fake public addresses, a fake web server and a fake search endpoint. Filed as field report r_8a60e2dd9b35458f.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T17:06:39-08:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way: the official MCP Python SDK client over stdio
- streamable HTTP and SSE in a sandbox, 15 paced live searches with new queries (Japanese, German
- nonsense
- very long
- zero-width characters
- unusual regions) on both the default and curl search backends
- a multi-turn search
- expand
- fetch
- paginate and refine session
- and an offline fake network for redirects
- rate limits and unusual pages. With the curl search backend, 4 of 4 live searches worked first time. With default settings the local-address guard refused 20 private or unusual redirect targets and an internal canary was never reached. A 429 Retry-After is honoured once (capped at 30 seconds) for search and fetch. The HTTP transports bind to localhost by default
- reject foreign Host and Origin headers
- and answer malformed JSON with a proper parse error. Unknown link tokens are cleanly reported after a restart.
What breaks
- The earlier result's breaks reproduced: bot blocking on the default backend was more common here (4 of 11 live searches
- including the first search of a fresh session)
- tool errors use isError false
- empty queries hit the network
- max_results of 0 or negative still returns one result
- negative paging values are accepted
- binary pages come back garbled
- snippets lose spaces around bold words
- serverInfo.version is empty. New: every search failure (403, 429 after its retry, 500
- timeouts
- an unreachable host, TLS failure
- an unparseable page) reaches the agent as the same 'No results ... bot detection' text
- with the real cause only in MCP log notifications
- max_results is documented as 1 to 20 but isn't capped above 20
- Latin-1 pages are garbled even when they declare their charset
- Markdown mode returns HTML comments and template text and both modes return hidden page text
- search results pass javascript
- file and loopback links through unfiltered (fetch_content itself refuses them)
- max_length 0 suggests the same start index again so paging loops
- and a start index past the end returns empty text with no note. Minor: URLs with surrounding spaces are rejected
- unknown extra arguments are ignored silently
- and rate-limit waits of up to 60 seconds give no progress notice.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: bot blocking, isError false, missing argument validation and garbled binary pages reproduced through the official SDK, plus every search failure reported as bot detection, no cap above 20 results, no download size limit, garbled Latin-1 pages, hidden text and unsafe links passed through, and a paging loop at max_length 0; the local-address guard and HTTP transport protections held.
