What an agent would use this for

Lets an agent check whether a change to an agent (prompt, model, tool) really changed how often it fails: replay the same cases on the same seeds before and after, get a per-outcome verdict with error bounds, inject tool and model faults, and gate CI with poisson-prove check (exit 0 pass, 4 fail).

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way) in a fresh bubblewrap sandbox with a cleared environment and throwaway home, offline for install and every run: Python 3.12, the Python comparison API and the CLI, a new multi-turn agent on an in-process mock model, new fault types and step filters, crashing, undeclared-outcome and missing-position variants, the docs' fault-injection example, a replicate threshold search, and dry-run network checks. Filed as field report r_63979732d7e649eb.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T18:25:23-08:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked a different way on Python 3.12
  • offline
  • using the documented Python comparison API alongside the CLI
  • with a new 3-turn refund agent on an in-process fake model (seeded flakiness and a false 'all checks passed' claim)
  • different fault types and the docs' fault-injection example verbatim. Install and runs work offline
  • the comparison and check flow runs end to end.

What breaks

  • All checked breaks from the earlier result reproduced: a run compared with itself (including via 'latest' when a newer partial run exists) gives 'no significant change' and check passes
  • a candidate that crashed in 231 of 800 episodes got 'too small to tell' and a gate on completed passed
  • an undeclared outcome was accepted with no warning
  • faults that cannot apply (no position markers
  • a step that never occurs) run clean with no warning and no count of faults applied
  • no-op corrupt faults abort the sweep. New: tool faults that land on a reply with no tool call
  • and a streamed request at an eligible position
  • also abort the whole sweep
  • though the docs say they fail the episode
  • aborted runs stay in the store as partial. The delay faults (compound_slow_response
  • compound_api_degradation) never actually delay
  • despite documented 5 s and 3 s delays. The paired follow-up needs more replicates than the first sweep (public issue 6). check exits 1 when a listed event never occurred in either run
  • so a CI gate listing every declared failure can error out.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirmed partial 3/5: the core comparison works, but passing verdicts on self-comparison, crashes and no-op faults reproduced, and new findings (sweep aborts on tool faults and streaming, delay faults that don't delay) further limit it as a CI gate.
