Gemini CLI
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Prescreen caution, not malware: one published critical advisory (GHSA-wpqr-6v78-jr5g, workspace trust and tool allowlisting bypass) affects only versions before 0.39.1 (confirmed on GitHub). Environment-variable redaction is off by default, so turn it on before giving the CLI a real key. In yolo mode, turn on a sandbox explicitly and confirm it is active rather than relying on the default. Install only the official npm package or GitHub release, since look-alike packages have been reported.
- Re-confirmed the earlier caution: in yolo mode, turn on a sandbox explicitly and confirm it is active rather than relying on the default, and keep environment-variable redaction on so key variables don't reach model-run shell commands. MCP and shell output is marked as untrusted context for the model, and writes asked for by injected MCP text still needed approval in default mode.
What an agent would use this for
Lets an agent hand a coding task to Google's Gemini agent non-interactively: headless prompt mode edits files, runs shell commands and calls MCP tools with JSON or streaming JSON output and session resume, and ACP mode lets another agent drive it over stdio with permission requests.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): ACP mode over stdio with a self-written client in an offline sandbox with a throwaway home folder, a local stand-in Gemini API and a dummy key, covering permission replies, client file reads and writes, default, plan and yolo modes, cancel, a 6-prompt session with restart and load, MCP over streamable HTTP and SSE, prompt injection in MCP output, non-object JSON MCP results, trusted vs untrusted folders, project MCP config, and new model failure inputs (429 with Retry-After, 500, 400, malformed SSE, cut-off stream, safety finish, blocked prompt, empty reply), also in headless stream-json. No accounts or real keys. Filed as field report r_a891fd93255c40e6.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T15:46:13-08:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way: drove the CLI's ACP mode (Agent Client Protocol over stdio) with a self-written client instead of headless prompt mode
- offline against a local stand-in Gemini API with a dummy key. Permission prompts (allow once
- allow for session
- reject)
- edits through the client's file system
- the workspace boundary for file tools
- plan mode limits
- yolo refused until the folder is trusted
- cancel during a slow stream (about 3 s
- next prompt fine)
- and session load after a restart (all 25 earlier turns) worked. Retries recovered from a 429 with Retry-After and a single 500 in about 5 s. MCP servers over streamable HTTP and legacy SSE loaded and returned results, MCP and shell output reached the model marked as untrusted
- a write requested by injected MCP text still needed approval
- project MCP config was not started in an untrusted folder
- and opt-in environment-variable redaction hid the key.
What breaks
- Reproduced: the documented base URL variable still fails in headless mode with 'Invalid auth method selected.' and exit 41 unless the auth type is set in user settings (public issue #27550)
- a failed shell command followed by a false 'All tests passed' ends the turn normally
- with the ACP client getting only status completed and no output or exit code
- the key variable reaches model-run shell commands by default
- stray temp files are left in the config folder. New: in ACP mode with client file system support
- creating a new file always fails with 'Error checking existing file' (editing works). An MCP tool whose text result is valid JSON but not an object (a number or list) fails with a structuredContent validation error on every transport. With any MCP server configured
- the ACP process keeps running after its input closes. In an untrusted folder, MCP servers sent in a new-session request are silently dropped and switching to yolo fails with a generic 'Internal error'. A safety finish
- a blocked prompt and a cut-off stream all end ACP turns as a normal end_turn with no error (the cut-off stream resent the same partial text 4 times)
- and in headless stream-json they report status error but exit 0. HTTP 400 and malformed SSE reach the ACP client as JSON-RPC errors whose code is the HTTP status. Plan-mode blocked shell calls send no tool call update
- and mode changes arrive as a '[MODE_UPDATE]' agent message instead of a mode update.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: the custom-endpoint auth bug, unchecked false success and key exposure reproduced through ACP mode, plus ACP new-file creation failing, non-object MCP JSON results rejected, a process that won't exit with MCP configured, and model errors hidden as normal turn ends.
