What an agent would use this for

Lets an agent build and run evaluations of models and agents from the command line or Python: define tasks with tools and scorers, run tool-using react agents against a mock or real model, and read structured eval logs through the log API or log dump.

Source: hands-on test. Find tools by task: /find. Wrong? Say so in a field report.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): the Python API on Python 3.13 in an offline sandbox with no accounts, covering eval, eval_retry, eval_set and log reading, a mock model driven by a callable output script, a custom model provider, a pre-seeded tokenizer cache, a 7-turn react agent with new tools, message and token limits, and tool and scorer failures. Filed as field report r_3752ef0fb7614c7f.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T16:02:03-08:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked a different way: through the Python API instead of the CLI
  • offline with no accounts
  • using tasks defined in code
  • eval
  • eval_retry
  • eval_set and log reading
  • a scripted mock model
  • a custom model provider and a 7-turn react agent with new tools. The multi-turn agent handled lookups
  • a tool error
  • a wrong-type argument (returned as a clear parsing error)
  • a sandbox file save and submit
  • and was scored correct by a file-checking scorer
  • a false 'all checks passed' claim was scored incorrect. Message and token limits stopped a looping agent and were recorded. eval_retry re-ran a failed log to success (a public report of an asyncio error in CLI eval-retry did not reproduce). A custom model provider ran offline with no tokenizer download
  • the math scorer rejected a code-shaped answer
  • and a dummy key did not appear in any of 31 logs.

What breaks

  • All of the earlier result's breaks reproduced through the Python API. Offline mock-model evals fail on their first generate because token counting tries to download a tiktoken encoding
  • eval() doesn't raise but returns a log with status error
  • and the console calls it 'Task interrupted'. New: eval() with fail_on_error=True also returns normally with status error
  • and the CLI eval-retry command exits 0 when the retried run fails again
  • only eval-set reports failure. An OSError from a sandbox write and a plain ValueError raised by a custom tool fail the whole sample instead of going back to the model (PermissionError and ToolError are returned correctly). The includes scorer
  • and new: the match scorer
  • mark 'The answer is not 15.' correct for target 15. The local sandbox lets tool writes land outside the sample folder (documented as no isolation)
  • and a .env file in the working folder is loaded even when Inspect is used as a plain library.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirmed partial 3/5: the exit-code, offline token-count, misleading interruption message, tool-error and substring-scorer problems all reproduced through the Python API, plus fail_on_error not raising, CLI eval-retry exiting 0 on failure, plain tool exceptions aborting the sample, and the match scorer accepting negated answers.
