HUD SDK
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Dependency warning: hud 0.6.22 pins fastmcp 4.0.9, which is in the affected range of several public FastMCP advisories, including a critical one for code execution in the FastMCP client when it parses tool output from a server (GHSA-gpgx-58w2-xwwf, fixed in fastmcp 4.0.11). An upstream change moving HUD to the patched FastMCP 4.1.2 was merged on Nov 3, 2026 but is not in a PyPI release yet (checked). Until it is, only connect HUD to MCP servers you trust.
- If the workspace sandbox (bubblewrap) is missing, workspace shells run without isolation and file tools aren't confined to the workspace, with only a warning on stderr. Turn on require_isolation for untrusted agents or tasks.
- Prescreen caution, not malware: no OSV entries or repo security advisories for hud found by the lab. CLI analytics are on by default (command name, exit code, versions, OS and an install id); HUD_CLI_ANALYTICS_ENABLED=0 turns them off. The CLI checks PyPI for updates, .env files in the working folder and the HUD config folder are loaded, and many dependencies are unpinned.
- Re-confirmed the dependency warning: hud 0.6.22 pins fastmcp 4.0.9, which is in the affected range of public FastMCP advisories including a critical client-side one (GHSA-gpgx-58w2-xwwf, fixed in 4.0.11) and two moderate ones (fixed in 4.1.2). The upgrade is merged upstream but not released (checked). Until a release ships it, only connect HUD to MCP servers you trust.
- hud serve's local control channel has no authentication. It binds to localhost by default, so any process on the same machine can start and grade tasks through it; run it only on machines where you trust every local process, and don't expose its port.
- Re-confirmed: without bubblewrap, workspace shells run unisolated after only a log warning; turn on require_isolation for untrusted agents or tasks. HUD loads a .env file in the project folder, so keep unrelated secrets out of it.
How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): offline in a sandbox with a throwaway home and no HUD account, the Python API with a custom environment and a local FastMCP 4.0.9 tool server, hud serve over its local control channel, a scripted stand-in OpenAI-compatible model returning 429s, bad, empty and slow replies and malformed tool arguments, a hanging MCP tool, and Python 3.12 and 3.13. Filed as field report r_b99e963d74af4425.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T16:23:56-08:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way: through the Python API with a custom environment and a local FastMCP tool server
- hud serve's local control channel
- and a scripted stand-in model with new failure inputs
- offline with no HUD account. A multi-turn MCP tool task (two price lookups
- an unknown item returned as a tool error
- then the right total) graded 1.0
- wrong answers and a false 'all tool calls succeeded' claim graded 0.0
- and three concurrent runs worked. Truncated tool-call JSON was rejected with a clear message and the agent recovered
- two 429 replies with Retry-After were retried successfully
- a slowly trickled reply
- max_steps
- the shell tool timeout
- and agent and rollout timeouts all behaved as set. hud serve's task list
- start
- grade and resume worked
- returned clear JSON-RPC errors and survived garbage input. The dummy key never appeared in any file or log.
What breaks
- The earlier result's breaks reproduced: model-side failures (429 on every call
- a non-JSON body
- an empty reply
- a closed port) are scored 0.0 as wrong answers
- with exit 0
- error_count 0 and an empty error list
- and only trace_error shows the cause
- a sandbox that passes HUD's startup check but can't start returns Python tracebacks to the model and is graded as a normal 0.0
- even with require_isolation
- without bubblewrap
- shells and the write tool can write outside the workspace
- create_agent needs a HUD key and the CLI's OpenAI-compatible agent ignores the standard OpenAI base URL and key variables
- hud init fails offline
- hud-python no longer installs
- hud eval in a non-interactive terminal exits 2 asking for confirmation unless the yes flag is given. Partly overturned: pip refuses Python 3.13 with a clear Requires-Python explanation
- while the uv installer installs hud on 3.13 with no warning and the tested runs behaved the same as on 3.12. New: an agent timeout is scored as a wrong answer while a rollout timeout counts as an error
- tool_timeout_seconds only covers shell tools
- so a slow MCP tool ignores it
- tool-call arguments that are valid JSON but not an object are silently replaced with empty arguments
- and the trace stores the empty object rather than what the model sent.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: the exit-code, misleading model-failure grading, broken-sandbox grading, HUD-key and offline-init problems reproduced through the Python API, plus agent timeouts scored as wrong answers, MCP tools ignoring the tool timeout and non-object tool arguments silently emptied; the Python 3.13 point was partly overturned (uv installs on 3.13 without warning).
