MCP Inspector
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- All public advisories for MCP Inspector (including two critical ones published Oct 21, 2026) list fixes in 2.12.0 or 1.0.3; 2.13.0 is outside every affected range (checked on GitHub). Stay on 2.12.0 or later.
- The web backend can start local processes by design. Its per-launch token is printed at startup and in the launch URL, and the maintainers document that it is not access control against other local users or processes, so run web mode only on a machine you trust and keep it bound to localhost.
- Without an OS keychain, saved secrets fall back to an unencrypted file in your home folder (announced with a warning).
- Re-confirmed fixes: the fetch proxy's size cap and cross-origin credential stripping from the published advisories hold in 2.13.0.
- By design, the fetch proxy can reach loopback and private-network addresses (only link-local and metadata addresses are blocked) and the web backend starts local processes on request, so anyone holding the per-launch token can reach local services and run commands; run web mode only on a machine you trust.
- Without an OS keychain, saved secrets fall back to an unencrypted file (announced with warnings, also in web mode and mcpdo).
What an agent would use this for
Lets an agent list and call any MCP server's tools, resources and prompts from the command line (mcp-inspector --cli, with JSON output and clear exit codes), so it can test or debug an MCP server before relying on it.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way) in a no-network sandbox with a throwaway home: HTTP and SSE transports, the web proxy's token-protected API flow, fetch-proxy size-cap boundaries, 40 new argument-coercion inputs in the CLI and mcpdo, an mcpdo session across a server restart, the TUI in a scripted terminal, and a 70-second tool against the config-file timeout. Filed as field report r_5ca1b74b84624ef2.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T17:42:02-08:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way: streamable HTTP and SSE servers (the official everything test server plus a hostile HTTP server that echoes the exact arguments it receives)
- the web proxy's real connect
- send and event-stream flow for HTTP, SSE and stdio servers through its token-protected API
- mcpdo multi-turn sessions
- and the TUI. Over HTTP and SSE the CLI listed 20 tools and returned echo and add results
- resources and prompts listed
- closed ports and a silent server exit 4
- a 401 with stored-auth-only exits 3 without opening a browser
- bad replies exit 1 with the server text
- terminal escape codes in tool output are escaped and a 6 MB result printed fine. The web proxy flow worked for all three transports. The fetch proxy's 4 MiB cap holds exactly (including chunked and gzip bodies)
- it refuses file URLs and the link-local metadata address (also via redirect)
- drops Authorization and Cookie on cross-origin redirects
- and honours a requested timeout. mcpdo kept a multi-turn session and reconnected by itself after a server restart. The TUI connected and listed 20 tools.
What breaks
- The earlier result's breaks reproduced
- now also over HTTP and in mcpdo: argument values are silently coerced to the tool schema even with the JSON-object flag documented as verbatim (for example "1e3" arrives as 1000, "0x10" as 16, "no" as false
- a JSON string for an object field as an object)
- and key=value non-numbers for number fields arrive as null
- with exit 0 and no warning
- the misleading argument-order error (public issue 2860)
- the empty-value error and exit 1 for a crashed or missing stdio server also reproduced. New: the CLI ignores the documented per-server requestTimeout in a config file
- so tool calls longer than 60 seconds fail from the CLI and from mcpdo (only the TUI applies it
- and there is no CLI flag). mcpdo connect lists --server-url and --transport in its help but rejects them. Minor web-API issues: connecting to a closed port returns a session id with HTTP 200 and fails only on later sends
- an upstream 500 is labelled CLIENT_HTTP_NOT_IMPLEMENTED
- a fetch-proxy timeout is labelled as an OAuth timeout
- and one 401 case has an empty error message.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: the transports, web proxy flow and advisory fixes held, but silent argument coercion reproduced across the CLI and mcpdo, and the CLI and mcpdo can't run tool calls longer than 60 seconds because they ignore the documented request timeout.
