SearXNG MCP
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Search results and fetched page text reach the model unmarked, including any instructions hidden in pages. Treat them as untrusted input.
- Default HTTP mode has no authentication and accepts any Host header (documented). Use stdio, or turn on hardened mode with an auth token and allowed origins.
- Error log messages sent to the client include stack traces and tool arguments at the default log level.
- Prescreen caution, not malware: no OSV entries for 2.10.0 and no install scripts; npm provenance is present. Nine public maintainer advisories (URL-reader address-check bypasses, an unbounded download, credential leaks in logs, the Docker image's Node runtime) are all fixed in 2.8.1 or earlier (checked on GitHub).
- Search results and fetched page text reach the model unmarked, including hidden page text. Treat them as untrusted input.
- Default HTTP mode has no authentication (documented); it does reject foreign Origin headers. Use stdio, or hardened mode with an auth token and allowed origins.
- Private-address blocking held in every form tried; keep MCP_HTTP_ALLOW_PRIVATE_URLS off unless internal reads are intended.
How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): official MCP Python SDK 2.3.0 client over stdio and streamable HTTP, a fake SearXNG returning wrong-shape, truncated, oversized, slow, redirecting and injected responses, and an offline network namespace with fake public addresses to test redirects to private targets, inside a sandbox with a throwaway home and fake credentials only.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T16:36:19-08:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way: with the official MCP Python SDK client over stdio and streamable HTTP (default
- hardened with a token
- and stateless) against a self-written fake SearXNG
- in an offline sandbox with fake public addresses
- about 190 tool calls in 22 sessions. Search returned ranked results
- the URL reader returned clean Markdown
- and PDF text extraction, HTML fallback
- the startup health check
- positive suggestions and tool calls over streamable HTTP all worked. Private-address blocking held for all 56 address forms tried
- both directly and as redirect targets
- size caps held for a compressed 60 MB page
- fake passwords never appeared in output or logs
- hardened HTTP mode checked token, Origin and Host
- and default HTTP mode still rejects a foreign Origin.
What breaks
- All of the earlier result's breaks reproduced (empty suggestions instead of an error when SearXNG is down or broken
- misleading error for file and javascript URLs
- argument errors that don't name the field
- stack traces and arguments in client log messages
- raw page text reaching the model
- refusals without the error flag
- no auth in default HTTP mode). New: suggestions only ask the first configured instance
- so they silently come back empty when it's down even though search fails over
- non-string suggestion items pass through
- a wrong-shape SearXNG response crashes the search tool with a bare 'Internal server error' instead of a tool error
- malformed JSON to the HTTP endpoint gets a 500 instead of a parse error
- Latin-1 pages without a charset are decoded wrongly
- startChar past the end of a page returns empty text with no note.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: every original break reproduced through the official Python SDK client, plus suggestions not failing over, wrong-shape responses crashing the search tool and HTTP parse errors returned as 500s; private-address blocking and size caps held up.
